Its called La Jolla (the jewel) for a reason.

Actually, in Spanish La Hoya means the jewel. La Jolla means the hole or cave.

Pacific Beach is a little less expensive than La Jolla and not that far from UCSD. It's within Bicycle distance if you have good legs. (uphill). Clairemont is even less, though not much.
 
Almost every apt in LJ has heat so shop well. BTW if you are moving to go to UCSD be prepaired to pay $1.5-2k/ month at the very least for a 2 bed apt.

Not to sidetrack the thread but holey jumpin moses is that THOUSAND's of dollars/month for an apartment to rent (rather than buy)?

the short answer yes ...San Diego is very expensive.
