Hey everyone! Glad to finally strike off a childhood dream and finally became Scuba certified! I live and got a my cert in San Diego (La Jolla Shores) and will be doing my AOW class beginning in September (likely to get Dry Suit cert soon after). Looking forward to learning a lot from the community and asking for advice for the best dives to do during my vacation to a Sandals resort in Exuma.

A little late reply, but how's the diving going? Have you been down a bunch of times? If you want to go out let me know! I'm just getting back into it myself.

Haven't been down since my OW class but I have AOW booked for September and scoping out charters on the Waterhorse or doing a dive at Mission Point to dial in weighting and test trim.

I also scoping out Power Scuba community events to go to when I have availability.

Waterhorse charter is awesome, what shop are you getting AOW through? I can recommend a great instructor in the area (not me)

If you regularly want to dive in SD, get a dry suit. Its miserable in a 7mm repeatedly

I am doing my AOW at Ocean Enterprise but want to get other certs else where to help with learning as much as possible so recommendations on instructors is welcomed. I also 100% plan to get dry suit certification along with nitrox.

Good. OE is the best, ask for Trevor Alfastad - he's the best and did my AOW about 3 years ago and taught me everything that set me up to dive safely and efficiently the following 300+ dives ;P
Nitrox is good to have, drysuit is good to have (in SD that is)
Depending on your budget, DPV is a fun one to have/learn

Getting the DPV seems like a whole lot of fun especially for shore diving. I guess dry suit first then DPV next :)

How is diving with a DPV here in San Diego? I am curious about when you use one.

I moved to South Florida before buying my 1st DPV but it would definitely help with La Jolla shores swimming all the way out - honestly I do a lot of shore diving out here in SoFL. It helps with the surface swims, helps fight currents etc etc

PS has a new diver event at the end of September where they match ND's with Experienced ones, Im going to sign up for that. And, about a month or so later they have another ND event going somewhere. The guys at the place you'll have your AOW have been extremely helpful with me and getting me back under the water. They mentioned PS as a great avenue and also below they said is a good learning experience.

On the 24th of August at Shell Beach SDdivers is doing a Free Reef Program, 3'rs. Snorkeling only, but the objective is to learn need to know things. Rocks, Rips, & Reefs is what the program is called.

I'm where you are at now, I need some more UW time to practice & get better, period. I was planning on doing some of that in La Jolla, using that area as a practice ground; I have a goal of ~40 dives before for my December dive trip.

So, I live a retired lifestyle, have my own gear and now always a tank filled, so anytime you want to go out let me know.
