Well, after an hour or two of sitting in a meeting and musing the "results" I can draw a couple of conclusions about the test and its implications:
1) Mechanical breathing measurements, beyond a certain point, do not necessarily correspond with perceived breathing performance. (Take a look at the ScubaPro MK16/R380 and the Mares V16 Proton XL, for example.)
2) The respected brands of apparent choice here, Apeks and ScubaPro, are all great regs in the over $400 range.
I guess I would have been delighted, as a pre-purchase consumer, and terrified, as a post-purchase consumer or a product manager if the differences between these top lines was a cut-and-dry decision.
As usual, it is which of the trade-offs you prefer. Note that nowhere are things like manual teardown of the second stage, worldwide availability of parts and/or service, suitability for high-reliability diving, cold-water performance, or your favorite point of difference.
