I use Zwagle regs so I looked at those results closely. According to the results the DS4, 50D and ENVOY performancew showed significant differences. To my knowlege these are, in all respects that would effect these tests, identical regs, therefore, this makes no sense. As a manufacturing engineer with a test background this publication seems to provide way more questions than answers.

Not that I disagreed with what you said, I thought it was kinda funny because it was actually spot on and I was gonna get in a little poke myself and when I came back to it...it was gone.:)

Ya mean kinda like this: just out of open water newbie diver's reg review..."Hey everyone, I just got me a brand spankin' new top o' the line Apeks reg and I tried it out in the deep end of the pool and it breathes like a dream!"

Mike - I looked at Zeagle's website where they post regulator test data. I don't pretend to know what all the numbers mean, but numbers for those three models on Zeagle's website are not the same as you seem to suggest they should be. I'm guessing here, but inhalation pressure has something to do with ease of breathing, and it appears that with a higher number the Envoy doesn't breathe as easy as a DS-IV?

If Zeagle themselves show differences between these regs, wouldn't it follow that another lab testing should also get different numbers?

There must be some difference between the Envoy and the others, or how could they justify a $200 premium for them?

...or:

then I tested xxx for 5 minutes at 15' doing qqqqqqq,
and then I switch to yyy for 10 minutes at 12' doing rrrrrrr,
and then I did an ssssssss with zzz for 7 minutes at 10' and
onandonandonandonandonandonandonandonandonandonand...

I also found during this extensive testing that xxx had problems with pp & ppp and yyy had problems with ppp & pp, but zzz only had a problem with p, and p just isn't a big deal.

I also think that yyy's pp would be a problem on Doria dives.

And my final conclusion is that zzz is absolutely the way to go but to each his own andonandonandonandonandonand...
:) {waggles head to hear it rattle}

btw I start AOW next month - woo~hoo!
that is if I pass my check out dives from OW.

:jester:

Well, after an hour or two of sitting in a meeting and musing the "results" I can draw a couple of conclusions about the test and its implications:

1) Mechanical breathing measurements, beyond a certain point, do not necessarily correspond with perceived breathing performance. (Take a look at the ScubaPro MK16/R380 and the Mares V16 Proton XL, for example.)

2) The respected brands of apparent choice here, Apeks and ScubaPro, are all great regs in the over $400 range.

I guess I would have been delighted, as a pre-purchase consumer, and terrified, as a post-purchase consumer or a product manager if the differences between these top lines was a cut-and-dry decision.

As usual, it is which of the trade-offs you prefer. Note that nowhere are things like manual teardown of the second stage, worldwide availability of parts and/or service, suitability for high-reliability diving, cold-water performance, or your favorite point of difference.

One question related to the Aqualung Legends, do the Apeks fans have any experience with these regs?

IST once "earned" a warning label from Rodale's.

This test they earned one of the highest marks.

Why? Who makes their regs.? It's a big turn-around.
