for those of you thinking Sept, just remember that lobster season starts at the end of the month so most boats fill up fast and dives sites are picked for the hunters benefit. I wouldn't recommend going during that time.
From the looks of the poll, a trip in June and also Sept may be in order. Ron and I plan to go out for 3 days this time, no decision yet on where or which boat.
Maybe we should add to the poll......... how many days and weekend or mid-week?????
Based on some quick google, the Looooobster season starts on Sept 27th.
I can try and modify the poll. Let's see how that goes. I'm assuming most of us are going to be into this for more than just a weekend. If I fly, I have to do at LEAST a Friday though a Monday evening if I want to dive just two days. I'm thinking taking off a few days, and doing some weekday diving on top of the weekend!
I just don't get to dive enough, and if I'm going to do a trip, let's make it a trip! I'm thinking maybe something like a Wed~Monday?
It's always difficult too organize things like this. Often the best approach is just to get a feeling for when people are available, and then pick some dates, schedule it, and with luck those that posted interest will schedule.
I'm up for June, or Sept! I hear Vis is best in the winter months (one reason I was aiming for March), but hey, I dive in mud holes! 10' vis is AWESOME!
NOTE: I have added a couple options to the poll. Suggestions are always welcome, so if my limited options are not working, let me know. One issue, if you have voted in the poll already, you can't do an update.
A weekend trip would be best for me. I might be able to swing a Wednesday through Sunday type thing, but I'm not sure my wife would. The beginning or middle of September would be good.

Cataline is shore diving, and a lot of the boats I'm looking at do day trips.
What I am getting at is that we could schedule this, and then folks that wanted to spend more time diving could arrive early, and folks that wanted to do just a weekend could still join in.
This is true unless we really get our STUFF together and do a live aboard or some such thing. If we just do day trips out, than folks can pick their schedule.
Maybe early Sept to avoid lobster season. As far as how long, if I have to drive out there I would like to dive at least 3 days. I say Robin and anyone else that has been there should pick the port they like to leave from which would limit the number of boats to choose from. Just my 2 cents
September sounds good to me as well. Do the boats go out on weekdays? I have heard good things about the Peace boat. We could do the boats on the weekend then venture out to Catalina for some weekday dives?

It all depends on the boat..... some go out only on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) and some go out daily. The boats that are booked steady every day of the week are the Truth Aquatics boats (3 boats in Santa Barbara), Peace in Ventura, Spectre in Ventura, and Sanddollar in LA. Other boats will go out during the week if they have enough people book (usually at least half the boat). The Magician in LA goes out on Wednesdays also.
You can't really go out on a boat in LA one day and in Ventura the next day - the traffic is unbelieveable, especially in the evenings (it could take 3-4 hours to get from one to the other!)
Diving over on Catalina requires taking the ferry which runs every hour or so. During the summer, hotels on Catalina fill up with certification classes so you need to plan ahead. In summer, I wouldn't do Catalina except mid-week to avoid all the students shore diving. There are 2 dive ops there and both have a boat for boat diving around the island. So a good plan would be a day of shore diving and a day of boat diving. The shore diving at Casino Park is supposed to be excellent.
Another thing to think about is whether everyone wants to dive one of the oil rigs. We did a rig from the Peaceboat 2 years ago and it was FANTASTIC. Here is my video:
lots of tech divers, diver with doubles, etc. but we did just fine using little 80s. The Magician in LA also does oil rig trips. If you go to Hollywood Divers you can see that they have booked for oil rig diving one day per month all summer. Just a thought.
The Northern Islands (Anacapa and Santa Cruz) are about 2 hour boat ride from the Ventura harbor. Boats usually leave dock around 7am. Boats going to Santa Rosa and San Miguel leave around midnight to get there for am dives.
The Southern Islands (Catalina, Santa Barbara, San Clemente) are usually visited by dive boats from Long Beach and San Pedro harbors. Catalina is about 2 hour boat ride, SB and SC are 5-6 hours so boat usually leave around midnight to arrive for am diving.
