The wife and I are heading down in @ three weeks. We are looking for a place to go for good lobster. Doesn't have to be fancy. We've had many a good meal in mom and pop shops and roadside huts. Suggestions? We will have a vehicle while there, so location on the island isn't a huge factor.

Maine.
Caribbean Lobster is not sweet and has no claws and is often frozen. I prefer them in the water to look at.
YMMV

I haven't been there in a while but it was excellent.

La Conchita del Caribe is our favorite place on the island for seafood. Definitely more of a locals place.

I prefer Caribbean lobster. Can’t speak for Coz, but I can tell you the lobster I had in Aruba was fresh and sweet. The 5 o’clock lobster special started at 6 o’clock because the boats were late getting to the pier restaurant. I ask what the delay was and the waitress pointed at a fleet of motor boats and said,”We’re waiting on them.” I chuckled and ordered another beer.

Is lobster harvested commercially in Cozumel or the region? I have eaten it freshly taken by a non-commercial hunter, but anyone know how the Coz restaurants source it?

I remember back when I lived in California going down to Baja Cal. for lobster from the myriad restaurants touting the traditional local preparation, which even back in the '80s were known to source their lobster in frozen form from elsewhere. It was an open secret, but we liked to pretend anyway that it was freshly plucked from the sea.

Also, the Baja experience shaped my perception of the culinary value of spiny lobster--me, having grown up in the Northeast. Sure, for a New England style lobster roll or a steamed whole lobster with melted butter it's gotta be the clawed Homarus americanus, but I will always have a soft spot for a grilled spiny lobster served with flour tortillas and beans. And margs, of course.

Harvested commercially in Cozumel. Also... in the marine park at night as well as out of season :(
