I went for an inexpensive Octo on my 1st OW setup. Now that I have more experience and have dove in a variety of situations, I appreciate the difference in how a reg flows.
Whether you dive with a traditional reg configuration or you are DIR/Hog inclined, the last think I want a panic diver to be concerned about is taking a breath on donated reg. It can be hard to tell the diffence during shallow recreational diving, but after taking a breath off of my old octo at 115',and facing up to the surface (not an emergency), I made the decision that the donated reg needs to perform as good as the reg I breath off of. The cost is minimal and worth it, IMO.
