How does the rest of your post support your statement that's in bold? It sounds like the shop that you went to at first is both ignorant and greedy. The others you refer to fill the tanks. So what's an example of a shop that refuses to fill a LP72 that's NOT ignorant or unknowledgeable?

I was wondering the same thing but was afraid to ask?

Get your own small compressor and tell them you will also fill your friend's tanks (their customers). With the cost of traveling 50 miles for an alternative fill source this might be an economical choice.

I know the question wasn't directed at me, but how about a shop that refuses to fill a LP72 because it is out of hydro or has big rust bubbles in it's side? I would think that those might be valid reasons to refuse to fill a LP72 that do not indicate ignorance. But shops that think a date of manufacture has anything to do with anything in a LP72 are

That's not a shop that's refusing to fill LP 72s, that's a shop that's following DOT rules.

Ok...finally got the tanks back and actually LOOKED at them! The tank they refused to hydro WAS one of the older AL tanks from the 70s. The two, very nice, Genesis 80s passed hydro and vis with no problems. I brought the AL tank back home because I just wasn't ready to spend and additional $160 on a new AL tank at this point. I may take them up on the $40 trade-in at a later date.
So...now I have another newbie question. The steel tanks have DIN valves and, of course, my regs are not. Can I just use the adapters that are sold for about $13? These are 3500 tanks.

3500 psi cylinders probably have 300 BAR female DIN and adapters WILL NOT work with yoke regs.

If you are talking about a DIN (brass) fill adaptor...please don't.

Many regulators come in yoke and DIN versions, you can get the DIN version of your regulator that way you are prepared to use any type of tank. Or you can change the valves on the tanks, there are some that are shorter DIN valves with a removable plug that allows you to use a reg with a yoke.

Oops...may have misquoted the price but something like this

that adapts a DIN first stage to a yoke tank valve. Not the other way around.
