Also note that the shop probably does not do the hydro test and will send it out (and often charge you for the convenience). I would suggest as others have said find a new shop and at the same time find your local hydro shop.

I do know that they send the tanks to a local welding shop for hydro. Or so I thought until I read the list above. I do know one of the local hydro testers personally so I'll give them a call when I have the cylinder back to see what's up!
Thanks tons for the advice!!!

OP, you didn't mention who said that owner, manager, or tank jockey?

If it was the TJ he was probably just doing as told (sort of). They kept teh instructions simple no tanks made before...

Not all shops that refuse to fill steel 72's are ignorant or unknowledgeble.
I took 3 tanks to Force E in Riviera Beach (West Palm Beach,Fl)to have them hydro'd and viz'd.
They sent them out for hydro (PASSED), they did the viz right there at Force E (PASSED) and yet, after having paid all that $$$ to have them tested, they told me they won't fill them.
Thank goodness this is Florida....there are tons of shops within walking distance that are more than happy to have my business.
In fact, every shop I've taken them to since (4 different shops) have filled them without question.
These are awesome little tanks.

Depends on why they refuse to fill a given steel 72. If the refusal is based on an arbitrary cutoff date, then I'm sorry but that shop is ignorant and unknowledgable (same thing, really), big time.

How does the rest of your post support your statement that's in bold? It sounds like the shop that you went to at first is both ignorant and greedy. The others you refer to fill the tanks. So what's an example of a shop that refuses to fill a LP72 that's NOT ignorant or unknowledgeable?

That is total BS. They should have told you upfront that even if you had them hydro'd and vis'd they wouldn't fill them.

So they took what 80-100 bucks and then refused to fill?
