WOW! Thanks guys. Really appreciate the help here. That gives me plenty of info.

Another vote for the Ralph Hood (Joel's Explorer Primary reel). I own and have used the Dive Rite "over the top" and the Halcyon Pathfinder (jasper handle). I'm not a fan of the "over the top" handles. The Halcyon is a decent reel, but it's big and bulky. The RH is compact and smooth...the best reel I've used.

I'd recommend the Salvo and the Larry Green(Ralph Hood) Sidewinders.

I have one of the other style reel's and after useing a Ralph hood in my Basic class I've got to get one. That reel rock's!!

Looks like there is a new product on the market.

I will buy two.

Read the thread and look at the youtube videos. Impressive, really.

One thing to note on the WW reels- they come stock with #18 line. Good for shooting bags, but not great for wrecks/caves. When they come out with a WW large arbor reel, they will be perfect.

Hey, Hey, terrillja

Do you own one of these?

They look really good. Smooth to operate.

If you have one, could you tell more?

Er , since us Old Foggies that are right handed , I always keep my light on my right hand and reel with it as well. (I use a Larry Green style of Primary).
OK , so my light jumps around a bit when I am in "Fast reeling-mode" but it works for me. And of course , I've jammed it a few times but it untangles easy.
And I know everyone else has their favorites too. :D
Lots of good advice here on what to choose from.

Hey , I use jump reels instead of spools. Go figure.
(I like to reel instead of reel-da-spoolie-thingies)

But that's just me :D

Yep, I own one. They are smooth to operate once you get the hang of them. I spent a night watching tv with my dry gloves on playing with it, and now I can use it blind (or in zero vis). The videos are pretty accurate, it really is easy to operate, the drag is a piece of cake to adjust, learning how to pop the spool off takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't bad. It is nice that if you manage to get it all tangled somehow (hard to do), you can pop the spool, yank all the tangled line out, and then reel it back in.

If you have any specific questions or want to see pictures of any part of the reel, ask away.

In most csaes.
It's not the REEL it's the operator.
The best advise I can give is KEEP IT SIMPLE.
I've seen people buy the bestest, most expensive, nicest looking reel and got tangled every time. Then I see guys with the ugliest, beat up, piece of crap looking thing and never get a tangle.
Practice makes perfect which ever one you choose.

You got it !!! :D :D :D
Tis not the reel , but the hand holding the reel ...
But that statement just protects those of us that have , uh , well-used gear !!!
