In the light of the above, have your own views of deep air / extended range diving evolved, or do you believe that deep air dives to 187 feet are OK as long as you keep your exertion levels and work of breathing in control?

I can't see a point for not using a helium mix, if available, deeper than 45 metres.
Have done 60 metres on air before, it was crystal clear warm water, but, wouldn't do again, specially on the far from ideal conditions we have here at brazilian southeast region.
Specially on CCR
 
Not at all. I see no reason to consider deep air in a place with helium readily accessible.
I have been there and done that, I now have the knowledge to not make the same mistakes again.
 
Rebreathers make all the difference. Gas bills of well over $100 are reduced to $10. Helium can be used for almost every dive and definitely deeper than 30m / 100'.
