My understanding is 181 is the max on 21%?
Sure, if you want to be narced out of your mind. Danger aside, you might also want to be able to remember what you saw. You do all that expensive training to see cool stuff and then don't remember half of it because you were narced.

Gopro :p

So I guess the $5 a CF Helium is what helps you remember, and not be drunk?

@DandyDon is gonna be posting your death on here if you wanna be diving that deep on air and rushing into deep tech diving. Yes you can do it. Yes people have done it for years, but there’s a reason it’s so frowned upon and why deep air dives are going the way of the dodo. Find a reputable instructor and ask what you need to do.

I’m not enrolled in AN/DP yet but I am headed there. 218’ is the max on 21% at 1.6, but that is only one of the limitations. You need to start thinking of diving as an envelope rather than just a line. You may be within the envelope for 02 partial pressure, but you are far, far outside it for inert gas narcosis.

This is just my VERY uninformed understanding from reading mostly here on SB.

Air at 150 feet? I'm not trimix trained yet either, but doesn't sound prudent to me.

for many there is no problem with air at 150. I did AN/DP dives, and several since, on air at 150 with deco of 50 to 100%. Getting narced is a very individual. thing and it is important to understanding your own limits and reactions. For me I have done 150 plus on air with no problems, others get narced at 100. In the end it is about progressive penetration and understanding your limits.

there are a lot of factors that can affect narcosis, dehydration, sleep, workload, effort, etc.

Progressive penetration is Key to developing understanding of your own susceptibility to narcosis and how to safely push your limits

Deep air has definitely gone out of favor, for good reasons.
I think it depends where you are, and how you define "deep". Around Tobermory, helium is non-existant unless you have your own stash. And many of our better sites are in the 100' - 160' range. LOTS of people dive these on a regular basis, on air.

As an aside, have you priced a mix fill recently? "Deep Air" may become more popular...

When I saw $5 a cf for helium, I lost interest, unless I do a rebreather someday.

If you're doing any real amount of mix diving, I think the payback is becoming really short. If I was a decade younger, I'd be all over one. As it is now, I am planning to spread a large, floating tarp over the dive sites we use mix on, to trap the bubbles. I just need to figure out how to suck it back into a tank...
