I have an older model Sherwood Magnum II reg set. The first stage has an air bleed valve that continually releases air when in use.

A LDS told me that the constant flow of air through this valve keeps the internal parts free of moisture and therefore the first stage will not freeze at cold temperature. Is this reg safe for diving at temperatures below freezing?

Are there any other advantages or disadvantages with this model?

This is correct. Obviously you can get any regulator to freeze but the Sherwoods are good in cold water. I've had one in -2C without problems.

The Sherwood 2nd stages, on the other hand, are behind the curve. If you wanted to keep the first stage you could replace the 2nd with a Aqualung Glacia 2nd and that would be a significant upgrade.
