What kind of viz could one expect around Quadra in May or would it just vary from day to day?

Usually pretty good vis. The water is moving good through Discovery Passage so there isn't much chance for the normal things to thicken up (plankton and algie). Most of the diving is drift, and the life is abundant and large because of the water movement. Abyssal is just up the hill from the ferry and they are easy to hook up with for diving, air, and accomidations if needed. www.divedynamike.com is the other opperation on Quadra.

I know that you asked about vis in May. I can't help you with that as I was there in February. I did write a trip report about it if you are interested. I stayed at Abyssal dive lodge. Earl's lodge and dive charter is easy to recommend.
