I've had two of my dogs die in my arms. Your post made me cry
I am so sorry for your loss.
It is impossible for many people to truly understand a loving bond between such a great dog and their owner. There is never a more loyal bond or loving companion.
The thought alone knowing that my 2 will most likely pass before me breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes.
I hope that you can enjoy the memories, think often of the love and loyalty that was blessed upon you, and that through time, the hurt will lessen.

I’ve been through this many times and it’s never easy. As a veterinary technician I can tell you that have performed an amazing act of love and kindness. Just like scubadada, your post has me crying.

The only consolation is that you did the right thing for the right reason.
I've done it twice myself and my biggest regret was that I waited longer than I should have, both times.

Be comforted in the fact you were able to hold her. I was deployed for 2 of mine and that hurt even more than cradling the last one until the breathing stopped. Being able to say goodbye is the best way.
I get extremely sad at beloved pets dying. My wife tries to remind me, "It's not about us, it's about them." She would remind me that we tend to live longer than dogs and cats, and we are fortunate to be able to care for several of them in our lifetime. It's our gift to them.
I've done this 4 times already, and have two more fur friends in my life.
You never forget any of them. They give so much, and take little in return. Their lives are unfairly short for what they bring us in life.
