The water is very warm at this time and visibilitiy has been good in all of the dive sites .

This includes los Arcos, Marietas and the south shore. Of course Morro, Corbeteña and so forth have even better visibility,

Happy diving !!

October 22, 2009

I went diving at Los Arcos area on October 15, 2009. I was accompanied by a friend of my daughter (my diving buddy) and her parents. All of us are PADI certified and as recreational divers, have been diving across multiple Caribbean and Mexico locations. However, diving with PVscuba has been one of the best experiences so far. Since we were on a cruise departing from Los Angeles, I wanted to make all arrangement prior to arriving at Puerto Vallarta. So, before we departed, I contacted PVscuba and got immediate response from Alex. Once we communicated all relevant information and paid the required fees online (very conveniently using PayPal), we arrived at the dive shop around 9:00 AM local time. There we met by Alex and his dive master and after the necessary formalities we went to the dive boat (also conveniently located a few steps from the dive shop). We departed for the Los Arcos area, a short 20 minutes boat ride from the dive shop, and during the boat trip the dive master spent time preparing us for what we were going to see. He was very attentive and knowledgeable of the area. Once we got to our first dive location, the dive master took his time making sure our equipment was ready and guiding us, one by one, to back flip from the boat. Once we were in the water, we all began our descent and - following the dive master - started to experience the breathtaking views of Los Arcos undersea. While diving, I noticed the dive master being very aware of where we were all times and, through predetermined hand signals, we were able to recognize the different kinds of marine life he was showing us. After the first dive, we stopped at Playa Mismaloya (the beach where the Night of the Iguana movie was filmed). We then re-boarded the dive boat for our second tank dive, just as exciting as the first tank dive. My buddy's parents rated this diving experience as one of their best. My thanks to Alex and his crew (his dive master and highly experienced boat captain) for this wonderful experience.

I have to agree with your assessment of PVScuba. I had a great time with them on two days of diving last year. Ramses was an excellent instructor/guide. PVScuba is very well run and organized by Alex. Look forward to diving with them in the future.

The weather has already cooled down a bit and it is still raining in the afternoon some times. No more AC needed during the night !! The mountanis and shores around the bay look very green and there have been some beautiful cloud formations with very clear skies.

Conditions at Majahuitas on the 25th were very nice. The first 40-50 ft had a visibility of 30-40 ft and a temperature of 86 F. Under 50 ft the temparature was 86-84 F and the water was blue with a visibility of 80 to 90 ft. On a deeper dive there were no further thermoclines and the shine of the sun at the surface could still be seen from depth as some Popeye catalufas showed themselves visiting the deeper rocks along the steep slope from abysal and colder water.

Very little surge and almost no current at all.

There has been some significant bleaching on some of the hard corals in the area this year due to El Niño causing very warm water, hope they recover !

Still wearing a 0.5 mm full suit and hood but should be going into 7 mm / dry suit season some time in December. The first humpbacks should be arriving soon too.

Felices buceos !!

Good conditions on the 15 th at Chimo and absolutely great ones at los Arcos on the 16 th of November.

Dive 1 Chimo / Bajo de Torrecillas

Visibility in the shallows 80 to 100 ft, water temp 83 F
Visibility at mid depth 70 to 80 ft, water temp 82 F
Very little surge and zero current.

Dive 2 Chimo /Bajo de Potrerillos

Visibility in the shallows 70 to 80 ft, water temp 83 F
Visibility at depth 60 to 70 ft, water temp 80 F
Very little surge and a little current coming from inside the bay

Both dive locations full of reef fish and cleaning stations . Some pelagics such as Pampano, jacks and more coming to get cleaned. At the surface the first humpbacks of the season and some hunting sailfish were seen.

Los Arcos. Very, very nice conditions for the area

Dive 1 Amarraderos and the north area of the wall

Visibility in the shallows 70 to 80 ft, water temp 82 F
Visibility at depth 70 to 80 ft, water temp 80 F
Very little surge and zero current.

Dive 2 Bajo del Cristo

Visibility in the shallows 50 to 60 ft, water temp 82 F
Visibility at depth 40 to 50 ft, water temp 79 F
Very little surge and zero current.

A very nice regularly sized chevron Manta visited along the wall, first at depth (130 ft or so), and then stayed around a little longer as she was getting cleaned around the 70 ft rock at the start of the wall. This area of activity was as good as it gets at los Arcos !!

Here are some images by Poncho Trujillo.

Enjoy the last days of great conditions this year !!!

Should be getting cold in the coming weeks or so.

The water has cooled down a bit (from 82F to 78F in the last days) . Time for 5 mm suits !!

Humpback whales are in the bay and mantas in some dive spots as well.

Saturday the 5th of Dec.

Very nice conditions at Los Arcos.

At the wall visibility was around 40 to 50 ft down to about 75 ft depth with a temperature of 77 F. Under 75 feet we had a mild thermocline droping to 73 F and visibility of 60 to 70 feet.

Mild surge an no current.

Two large shoools of bigeye jacks were seen at the 70 foot rock along the wall. At the moorings were lots of nesting sargeant majors.

On the second dive at Bajo del Cristo fish were very, very abundant including eagle rays, triggerfish, pargo, surgeon fish ,...

We will see what the conditions are like today .

I'm planning to be at PV on Dec 31 (cruise), What water temperature should I expect? Would 3 mm will be enough or should I bring my 7mm that I use for N. California diving?
