Sammich........me hates the Sammich.......I can handle improperly pronounced roof but Sammich sends knives through me.

Yes, my UK friends say booooook and foooot, and I understand them completely! Out of country people are much more apt to get away from proper "English" protocal" and be amused by their "accent' than those that are "Americans" and should know better......lol.

I love going to the Loo rather than the ladies room or the head when I'm on a boat. So much more sophisticated than going to the "john," which stirs up other visuals....lol

How about the "WC" on a boat? That would be Water Closet.

I think pronouncing Roof like Book makes you sound like a "gUf".

Don't sound like hill-billy. Get sophisticated and try it with me...

People judge and are judged all the time on the way they look, the way they dress, the way they talk, where they live, what religion they are, and the list goes on and on...

I'm from the south and there are a lot of things we say that people judge us on.

It's not my problem. :)

I'm originally from Illinois and always pronounced roof as I do look, book, took until I moved to Alabama. That's the only word I have ever pronounced that causes a reaction from the locals. My reasoning is this, its because it is written exactly like look, book and took!!! Why wouldn't you pronounce it the same? Now I have polled the Websters and CNN is good enough for me!!

Maybe I need to luke in a different buke for alternate pronunciations LOL

:D Hi, Keels!!! :wavey: Welcome to ScubaBoard!

BTW, you might want to keep an eye on the date and time of the posts in the thread you're reading . . . this one is two years old. :)

So, how do people pronounce, "hoof"?

LOL, Jax. hoof is a long "o", so it would be hoof as in roof. Hoof (soft O) would be like put....what the hell does that mean?????

Nothing wrong with resurrecting an old thread--midwesterners are still mispronouncing "roof." What I don't get, though, is how one stumbles across a thread like this one. What were you searching for, Keels--"roof"? "Dutch girls"? "Would of"? This is a scuba forum! :D

Canada also has regional preferences on roof. And washrooms, not restrooms. Railway crossings, not railroad crossings. Now that we've IRONED that out. "I Run" (my wife, from Eastern Canada)--"I Ern" (me, born in NY).

:rofl3: Good one!

My best friend "arns" her clothes, but "I ron" is what steel is made of! :)

Nah. Steel is made of "I Ern". Is it? I thought steel was just made of steel.
