I have never lost a mask. I have however had a mask break (the frame must have been damaged somehow) and a strap break.
I don't use a silicon strap anymore and although I usually don't carry a spare mask, I do it when cave diving and often on deeper dives.

From the "loss of mask" point of view, wouldn't a bicycle helmet type chin strap work? It would be independent of other gear. Would work with or without a hood. Wouldn't be an entanglement hanzard. The only direction it could be knocked off is down around your neck.

Granted, it doesn't address the issue of a mask break underwater.

I go with the mask under hood method. It's not that much trouble once you get used to it.

I'd like to hear you repeating that sentence after trying it with a nice and snug thick winter hood, with a face opening just big enough to accommodate the mask and the reg, and the neck of the hood safely stuffed into the warmneck of a drysuit.

The face opening of my hood is so small (from about 1cm above my eyebrows to just below my lower lip) that I won't even try to pull the hood down around my neck, and donning the darned hood is enough of a chore even if I don't try to pull it over my head with a mask on my face...

Nice, but how do you clear them?

Interesting question... I never cleared mine underwater when I was playing hockey... but if it's possible to drain the water on the surface, I guess it's also possible to blow air into it underwater. Although the straps don't stretch, maybe they allow for enough rotation of the mask and the mask silicon skirt gives in enough so that it's possible to open a bit underneath... although it will be a small gap and probably harder to do.

I bought a few of these: [DELETED]

Pretty cheap and gets the job done.

I hope it helps.

I have just been informed that the URL I posted linked to a pornographic site.
I apologize to anyone who tried to access this URL.
This was not intentional. I tried the link before I posted it.

I just tried it now www.oceangoods.com

You can try googling "mask saver" and "the ultimate scuba diving mask strap".

There is even an open thread on SB about this.
Maybe I should have linked to that in the first place.

Once more please accept my apologies if I offended anyone.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

This is pretty strange, and the moderating staff is trying to figure out how it happened. It has every appearance of a legitimate link, and when we try to same link outside of that post, it works fine. I have no reason to suspect that the site is anything but legitimate, but something was done to hijack the link that we can't quite figure out yet.

Someone brought up a velcro strap to hold the mask strap in place. Someone else brought up the issue of the stretch of it. Being also a skier, this is similar to the plastic holder for goggles, which in one end is permanently connected on the bottom and a snap button connection at the top. Something similar could be done for hoods. Metal isn't a good idea, but it could be a buckle at the top or something else, but anything that provides a strong attachment to the hood.

I btw, have lost one mask. It was stupid of me. Done diving and put my mask on my forehead. I was towed by my buddy with a DPV quite a long distance back, and I thought (key word "thought") it was so tight there that I would notice if it came loose. Not. When I take my mask off, now I pull it below my chin. Yes, rookie mistake. Did that after 12 dives or so.

There is a dive expo here in Seattle next month. I'll try to talk to some hood manufacturers about it.

There are straps designed to keep your mask on, such as the ones used in underwater hockey. They are quite effective even when you're being kicked in the face :p

For example CanAm Mask Strap
Sure, sounds good.

Wait, what? Underwater hockey?

The link left in the quotes is still to some adult friend finder website.
