DD. I am not familiar with period measurements in regards to waves. I've learned something new today! What is considered short verses long?
8 seconds is reasonably long... look at this buoy data: NDBC - Station 41114
This is real time data, it can tell you what is happening right now.
Wave period is the inverse of frequency. T = I/f If the waves are coming tall and fast you get your butt kicked.
If they are short and fast (like a wind chop) then you may be cool, depending on the boat, the direction of wind and direction of travel..
If the waves are moving you up and down slowly (a long period, yet powerful swell) then the effect on the boat (in deep water ) is minimal or gentle , particularly if you are stopped or moving slowly.
Long period (and tall) waves DO have the ability to reach down deep into the water and stir up the bottom. They have a lot of energy.
now look at this real time picture of a site maybe 45 miles form that buoy. This is what a long period wave looks like
