DD. I am not familiar with period measurements in regards to waves. I've learned something new today! What is considered short verses long?

8 seconds is reasonably long... look at this buoy data: NDBC - Station 41114

This is real time data, it can tell you what is happening right now.

Wave period is the inverse of frequency. T = I/f If the waves are coming tall and fast you get your butt kicked.

If they are short and fast (like a wind chop) then you may be cool, depending on the boat, the direction of wind and direction of travel..

If the waves are moving you up and down slowly (a long period, yet powerful swell) then the effect on the boat (in deep water ) is minimal or gentle , particularly if you are stopped or moving slowly.

Long period (and tall) waves DO have the ability to reach down deep into the water and stir up the bottom. They have a lot of energy.

now look at this real time picture of a site maybe 45 miles form that buoy. This is what a long period wave looks like

Looks like I will go with magicseaweed in the future and get out diving. Now just need to ditch this cold.

Looking great for Thursday - Sunday the week coming up. Better be recovered by then....

Hey DD! Thanks a lot. That is incredibly useful/helpful information. Conditions were stellar this morning. Back out tomorrow morning.

In Miami the seas were 1-2 today. The conditions were very nice for diving.

Drift dove on a couple of reefs off Pompano yesterday...blue water, gorgeous weather, less than 1' seas, an honest 60' of viz, and a southerly current...almost 3 kts on the surface, a bit less deeper.

Today should be flatter according to forecasts.

Heading out for a 2 tank drift west palm fri and sat morning then a 2 tank Monday afternoon In ft lauderdale... Hope it is nice. 40 foot would be better than I have got since June.... Tomorrow will be my first time showing up as a solo. If anyone is on wetter the better tomorrow morning say hey. I will be the big goofy white guy by himself.

Hope you have great weather and viz! And some awesome dives. I know it's been a rough season for diving in Florida. Headed out Sunday regardless but if you get a chance please post a report from Friday/Saturday.

Thanks. Will post when I get back. Only diving I know is this year just certified in May. Dive 20 & 21 tomorrow. If this is a bad year I will be excited when it goes back to normal.

Jon, who are you going out with Saturday morning? I am diving too, with Walkers.

I was in the water last Saturday, there was a light NB current, slightly S of the Breaker's: Paul's and cannot recall second dive site. The viz was about 50+. There were not too many moons.

I was also in the water Tues. There was no current and the viz was about 40 feet at the bottom and 10 at the top. The water was algae soup. The dives were fun though: Shark Canyon and the Corridors. It was a good cardio work out, too.

Temps were 80-81.

I am going out with little deeper on sat. Just got to the boat this morning. Nice outside. The deckhand says only two divers today. This ahould be different.. Smallest i had done before was 6.
