Possibles kit contents (sorry if repost, but I can't find anything on the subject)

Duct tape. Look around in the camping section at Wally world for the small flat rolls. Doesn't take up much room, and it is indespensible at times.
 
O-rings (if I'm renting tanks is this necesary)

Yes, they are necessary. On my first check-out dive for OW, I inspected the tank & o-ring just like we were taught in class. I called the instructor over and asked if the small nick in the o-ring on the rental tank was going to be a problem. He said let's turn it on and find out. Sure enough, it popped the o-ring out. :11: Luckily, this was at a very busy quarry and we were able to get a spare from another diver.

Needless to say, the first thing I bought for my save-a-dive kit was a pack of o-rings. :)
