Possible southern reef closure

Yup. This was clearly well thought out political move to appease masses who don't know any better.

Some told me a bunch of students from the U of Mexico recommended this closure and did some studies on the reefs.

White band / plague appears to be killing the coral like crazy. I don't know what less divers accomplishes there. From what I read they can't even prove that environmental condition cause it for sure. Even though they suspect it, they can't prove it. Sounds like it is still very much in question. It will run its course, whatever that course is, it seems.

Anyone want to go on a private Sea of Cortez Liveaboard with me an my wife?

My girlfriend and I were there last month (Loreto) and the Sea of Cortez has plenty to offer. Much of the surrounding land areas are fairly pristine and untouched, still retaining their natural beauty. This is quite a contrast to Cozumel, where the beaches are lined with hotels and restaurants. Perhaps if enough divers start showing up they'll ruin it too! The best snorkeling seems to be on the nearby islands so I'm thinking perhaps it's not convenient enough to the cruise ship passengers--so far they only have been getting an occasional cruise ship. Apparently there are many restrictions in the National Park areas so hopefully nobody will be allowed to build crap all over everything.

Dear Christi , with all respect, I don’t normally participate here but I will like to clarify something.

I bought the Aldora VI in 2015 specially to navigate and dive to the northern sites I explored IT WAS BOUGHT WITH THAT IDEA IN MIND , really proud of it.

same as we did back in 2006 in the east side with Gaviota that now we use as a chase boat, we dive the east side with our regular boats with permits in the present time.

So out of our 7 boats only One is with no permit.

We love to explore and innovate and find new reefs for everyone and for us, it was and is that
Passion that drives us not the necessity of use of boats with no marine park permits.

why others don’t do the same I don’t know?

But we live on an island surrounded by water I guess there is people that are more curious than others.

I was complimenting your smart use of that boat - not criticizing you - it was nothing personal. I would do the exact same thing. I just wasn't sure if you had one or two boats that you used for that purpose.

Additionally, I was replying specifically to the person who asked why more people don't dive outside of the park. It is because the permitted boats are being used to dive the standard reefs in the park.

Good presentation on SCTLD. This is what is killing coral in Coz. The bottom line is the disease is there, it is spreading throughout the Caribbean and up the east coast of the USA and at the present time there is absolutely nothing that can be done to stop the spread, only perhaps slow it down.

Someone else started a thread in the charter boats sub-forum and I kinda co-opted it after it did not work for him, but I did not get any takers either, so started looking at Cozumel. Maybe with all the eyes on this thread I will have better luck.

My last contact with the El Duque owners was September 6, so I will have to re-confirm if the dates are still available.

My wife got certified on El Duque 22 years ago. Looks like they cleaned the boat up quite a bit.

Well the cops and military ended up being called to the meeting so it’s going well. Heard of one fist fight at least. I don’t think they like it...

WHAT?? LOL I was there at the planetarium from 12:45pm (15 minutes before the meeting started) and throughout the whole meeting. I left at 2:55 pm (according to the text I sent someone on my way out) as the meeting was wrapping up. It was packed in there - and people were sitting on the stairs in the auditorium - there was a small bit of booing when they had to stop letting anyone else enter the auditorium. That was around 1:15pm. But, there was literally no place else for anyone and that would have been a safety issue as people were sitting on the stairs. So the staff quickly got it together and got their AV person out there and set up a video for the people outside the auditorium in the foyer area of the building. It's a large area and the doors remained opened so it would have been very easy to hear any disturbance and I was literally sitting behind the guy with the big yellow sign closest to the door. There were no disturbances other than when they got booed for saying they had no more room.

As far as police are concerned, there's always police stationed during most public meetings like this. There were two policeman standing outside (one outside each entrance) when I got there and a few more on the street. That's quite common. I did not see military -but that would be no big surprise either. We are a small island - it's quite common to see them too. We heard absolutely nothing that resembles any fighting whatsoever and the crowd was amazingly respectful. Kudos to the government representatives that allowed various folks to speak and ask questions. Some great points were made and again, this was extremely respectful from all parties. There was an incredible amount of support.

No idea where that juicy piece of gossip came from. smh

Edited to add: Your comment: The military does copping there too. Local, state cop and the military on scene. And they thought those protests in front of the harbor masters were bad.

That's quite a stretch of exaggeration. At least for this meeting it was!

Shake your head all you want. One fight at least started to break out. I know the guy that seperated them. Maybe you were inside when it happened. IDK. You know some people WITH park permits couldn't get in for lack of room....

Sure maybe the cops where there because hey you know there was a lot of emotion. You know, in case fights broke out or something...

Thanks for the information. I am booked for Cozumel Nov 23 and have always been guided through the Palancar system and south. I presumed those were the best , most diverse sites. I don't know if this an accurate presumption or were we always there just because of perception or habit of the dive operator. I do trust the operator and think perhaps those southern sites are visited for a very good reason. I am open to other sites , just wondering what I'll miss ... or..... gain ?? Cancelling the trip is not an option with all the fees / booked vacation etc.

I don't remember when was the last time I dove in the Park, all my diving has been out of it for the past 16 years.

I have a meeting with ALDORA SPECIAL OPS team tomorrow morning .

it is our intentions to reactivated the beginners dive sites and intermediate , like the Guarderia , beautiful shallow dive tons of scrolling juvenile fish, patch coral reefs 50 to 60 ft calm current, among many others.

ALL OF OUR DIVERS WILL HAVE THE BEST OPTIONS AVAILABLE ON THE ISLAND IN THE PARK AND OUT THE PARK

WE WILL PRESENT A LOG OF DIVE SITES SOON


Advanced dive sites are frequently dive on the north,

I like to clarify that when I say northern dive sites I don't refer of barrcaduda or San Juan that's downtown those are close to town , and have strong currents.

I mean less frequently dove sites and inside the rada of cozumel , inside banco de cozumel.
