There was a time around about my childhood were most kids and dogs were raised to behave.

We had German Shepards when I was young and they were not any more dangerous than any of the other neighborhood dogs (mutts, labs, poodles and even a saint bernard). Some of the neighborhood kids, when we were small, perceived one of our Shepards as scary because he was prone to jumping on them and totally slobbering your face. He never bit anyone. He just really liked kids so much, he'd knock them down when they got close to his run to pet him. Of all the dogs we had when I was a kid, the most agressive and hardest to handle was a Lhasa Apso! Hard-headed, stubborn alpha male who had to have his way no matter what! Too bad that was in the '70's and we never had him neutered. Cesar Milan wasn't around either! I'm pretty convinced that neutering would have done wonders for controlling my Lhasa!

I'm glad you're okay, Ber! That Alpha attitude is what it takes to handle dogs.

IMHO, I don't believe that there are any bad breeds, just too many people with dogs as substitutes for spoiled children! Cases in point, are how nasty most of the little ankle biters are! So many are so spoiled, their feet never even touch the floor! I've watched a lot of the Dog Whisperer and thru seeing that program, I am even more convinced that the handling of dogs is a skill that most don't have a clue about! And some of his favorites are Pitts! There's a big red one that belongs to a big name rapper that Cesar uses all of the time to help socialize his customer's "problem" dogs.

It is particularly distressing to me that governments can ban breeds based on the behavior of a few. As a teenager, I was more afraid of my friends ankle-biting rat dogs than any others in the neighborhood. Damn things are sneaky too! Bite you when you're walking away!

Like someone previously said, sooner or later they may get around to banning one that is dear to you! Cute little Chinese Crested's in little aloha shirts or duck herding Aussie sheep dogs!

Banning a breed isn't the answer - the bad guys will just move on to something else - another dog or another species. Holding the individuals with the problem animals responsible is the answer.

I agree! Last thing we need is a bunch of ferocious Chihuahua's!:D At least not anymore ferocious than most of those one's already are!

im not afraid of dogs but it totally ****s me when dog owners yell out while their panting running pet is coming at me "its ok, hes friendly".

i dont give a poop if it was going to lick me to death - the presumption by the dog owner that i dont have a fear of dogs ********s me

whew - i feel better now ;)

I agree with you Almity! One's dog may be perfectly friendly to them and their friends but I'm a stranger and your dog and I don't know each other!

I do use the Dog Whisperer's tactics when dealing with strange dogs and it works! Even works with creating detente in the rivalry between my cats!

Oh, and for all you anti Pitt Bull people, just a reminder that Petey, the dog from Little Rascals fame was an American Pitt bull. Nobody had horrors 40-50 years ago about Pitt bulls!

Oh boy. I can't believe it's back

Me either Harry....!

I kept my big mouth shut through the entire thread, As I very much agree with H2 Andy and TSANDM.

I had an American Brindel for 13 years, His name was General.... He was the very best Family dog I have ever had, loving careing and very friendly. Never aggressive unless you being a stranger approched my infant daughter without myself or her mother close by. And only then would he stay next to her and growle at you!!

I had to put him down one night after he was attacked and injured while on duty with me and had his leg broken , And then years latter the injury took him to the point of pain he could no longer walk.

My daughter was 12 then and general was 13, I lost one of my children that night and my child lost her best buddy.

Did I mention he was a PIT BULL TERRIER!! An American Pitbull as they called him, Never attacked , bit or in anyway harmed anyone.

Best friend I have ever had and NO dog was ever as good!!

It is so..... sad to me that some people like those girls make terriers/pit's so BAD that they scare people like that one did to berr rabbit!!!

Sorry that happend to you Rabbit, The owners should have been charged!!

haha. nice. my sister bought this Landrover that cost a lot of bank, leather seats and all. She leaves her golden lab in the rig the first day she has it and he did that to ALL the seats in the entire rig!......did I mention Labs are boneheads?....friendly, loveable, but boneheads. oops, never mind. See, an Aussie would just never do that.

LOL! I think it's more like your Aussie would never do that because he knows, deep down, his next home would be the dog pound if he did!:rofl3:

Concealed carry is the only solution.

Your Honor, I was in fear of losing life or limb while under attack by that vicious beast, so I neutralized the threat.

I find myself saying that to people who walk right next to my deaf female pitbull and then freak out when she tries to smell them. If I'm holding a four foot leash, don't walk two feet away and then give me a dirty look because my dog tried to sniff you.
