H2Andy:
i also doubt that there will be time to shoot the dog more than once or twice, and i don't think that's going to stop their charge, particularly a
larger dog.

I don't know about all that other stuff you said Andy, I personally never had the desire to own a big aggressive anything, never understood it really, but I'd be willing to bet my gear against your's that a single 357 shot to the body or head of a charging pit bull would not only stop it cold but would likely kill it dead as a hammer, just like it would you or me.

I would never shoot a dog of course so we're gonna have to get Catherine to do it. You can shoot the owner.:D

what is this gun fetish you guys have? do you realize that you are speaking of publicly carrying a weapon and killing an animal that you are not going to consume?! since when is that right? since when is one wrong made good by another wrong?

personally I would rather take 10 of those madly crazy mythical pit bulls over one gun slinging moron!

guns and people with guns are far more dangerous then any dog!

ANDY said it, right after Lynne posted. When he still was thinking clearly. I think it was an unfettered spontaneous thought, unfiltered by years of education and Google searches.

sorry, but I have read back to the beginnig and still don't know what you are refering to, got a post # for me?

if you hit it

you have to

1. see the dog attacking
2. immediately pull the gun
3. aim
4. fire before the dog gets to you; and
5. (most critical of all) hit a small, charging target

at best you'll get two shots off.

odds are that unless you are specially trained and practice for
this contingency, you will miss both shots.

if you do hit the dog, you might stop it cold. but then again,
you may not. if you hit it, though, you'll probably stop it
with a .357

"I would never shoot a dog of course so we're gonna have to get Catherine to do it. You can shoot the owner.:D:"

Have Glock, will travel.....unless you prefer the bureau issue 38 with hollow points. Carrying a gun around is so inconvenient.

One of the most dangerous dogs I ever met was a standard bred poodle - high strung raised as a "show" dog by someone who really didn't understand dogs and left its care to others. Would snap at anything that came into its space. Owner not dog.

I understand where you are coming from Catherine - you have heard that sharks are dangerous, have read that sharks have attacked humans so you have decided to avoid them and protect your children from them notwithstanding information that tells you that almost all sharks are benign. A rational choice given limited information. One made by much of the world.

With more information a more rational response might be to avoid the "West End" and particularly places where idiots hang out and have large dogs free in a yard.

However, given the difficulty in identifying who exactly owns a dog it is also rational to avoid any type of dog that is prone to being owned by the idiots out there who create vicous dogs unless you know the owner. Not my choice, but I am a little more careful when around the type of dogs that these idiots might own and I don't know who owns the dog. If I see a "pit bull" off leash and don't know the owner my radar goes up and I will not turn my back on the dog. This used to apply to dobermans, and before that german shepards, but idiots have switched so I no longer worry about them.

Would not go so far as to avoid the breed altogether even if I know the owner because I know that the owner has far more to do with temperment than breed. That is my choice however.

(Found the "pit bull" on the second try. Interesting pictures - somewhat misleading, but only slightly.)

they've switched to .40 SW

eyebrow

and i'd go for the Federal Hydra-shock or equivalent... nice self defense round

I'm so glad we got that straight. Dang!! Just when I thought I was gittin some new gear. I never miss by the way. That is if I ever shot at anything I would never miss. I shoulda been a moron gunslinger.

Don't get the gun thing we can't carry them here.

On a side note, an untrained shooter is dead meat against a trained opponent within about 15 to 20 feet. I will take the gun away about 19 times out of 20. Against a trained opponent 0 times out of 20. Was a very educational exercise. The exercise was stand 15 to 20 feet away, point the gun at the "bad guy" and say don't move or I'll shoot. Feel free to shoot if he moves. As the bad guy I win almost every time if you don't know what you are doing. PS trained does not mean a good shot

Dog is not a person, but a very very small moving target. Bet on the dog in round 1

If you survive and still have the gun then in round 2 while the dog is hanging on to your arm/leg whatever as opposed to your throat you win. Depends on the dog and its attack style.
