If I was to buy a new motor it would be a new Yamaha 4 stroke 90.

After owning several 2-stroke motors, I've thought the new 4-strokes were the way to go. They weigh more but have much better gas mileage perfromance, are supposed to be quieter, and also have better emissions with no messy oil residue in the water and 2-cyle oil "smell"

But I was watching something on one of these outdoor shows and they had a new engine they were showcasing on the show and testing. It was the Evinrude E-Tec. It's a 2-cyle, but is supposed to be quieter and cleaner than a 4-stroke, require less maintenance and I think more fuel efficient that a 4-stroke. OF course is weighs less also. Now I've never "owned" an Evinrude, but I've use them before and I think the y are OMC, so I imagine that the "other brands" will be coming out with this technolgy soon also. But if I was going to do a "new" engine purchae, I'd at least look into one of these over a 4-stroke before purchasing. It might be a better solution.

Just something to think about for your next new engine purchase.

If anyone has one, I'd like to know how they like it, etc. ?

BTW.. I found that Evinrude has info on this engine on their website.

Evinrudes and Johnson's are actually Suzuki guts. Essentially they are made by Suzuki.
I have a Suzuki 4 stroke 140 on my Zodiac with about 250 hours and so far love it. She starts with no issues every time.

BTW - nice boat!!!

How do you get back in the boat? Do you carry a ladder? Nice rig.
Sorry Jim I didn't get to you earlier.
What we do is clip off our rigs on an equipment line and remove our weight belts then reach up and drop the weight belt into the boat. Then with one swift fin kick and pull-up on the gunwale we pull ourselves in. It takes a little athletic ability but after a few times it gets easier. After everyone's in we pull the rigs in one by one over the transom and run them forward up to the rack.
I have considered building a swimstep and ladder but that is extra fluff and not really needed on this boat.

Here are some pics of my custom dive boat that I built myself from scratch.
The boat features a stainless tank rack that holds 8 tanks. Down in the holds 4 more tanks can be stored for a total of 12. All gear can be stowed down in the holds to keep the deck clear. It has a 20 gallon fuel capacity and I put a Yamaha 60 Enduro commercial motor on it because I wanted to keep it light. This allows me to launch in very hard to reach areas including Ocean Cove and across beaches. The design is based on a Glen-L Little Hunk flat bottom Pacific Dory and works very well up here on the North Coast.
The boat is only 18.5 ft. LOA and has a beam of 7.5 feet. It can accomodate 4 divers comfortably with 3 tanks each and all gear including fins, masks, weight belts, etc.
I am going to get started building a t-top for it soon out of stainless.

Nice and clean... you must keep that engine in shape because it looks to be older (that a question not a statement!).

Also - where do you sit when gearing up?

I have a twin-vee that I love because of all the open space but i don't have a t-top, which means we have no sun protection during the SI. That's next on the list.

Are you adding a windshield (i.e. sea-shield :)

What's your GPM and range?

the innards of my new (1 year) pair of 75 hp evinrudes are definately not suzzies...

I recognize that boat! Thanks for the pics Eric, makes me homesick. I've done a lot of dives off this beauty and I have to say its one of the best small boats I've ever dived from. It really impressed me the time it got us home when conditions went really bad in Ft. Bragg. Now you just need to bring her down south so we can impress a new crowd!

Really? That's interesting. I'm going to have to get in touch with a client of mine that is affiliated with Evinrude. I was told that by a mechanic that has the done maintenance on my engine. I think I also heard it from a few different sources when I was buying the engine nearly three years ago.

Hey Dale!
How's it hangin"
Lately I haven't seen enough of her in my side mirrors. It's been a while since I've been out with the winds and all.
I've got some other pics in slide form I'll e-mail you when I get them scanned.
I hate to make you more homesick, but we are planning a trip up to Arena Rock on the 7th.
You really need to plan on the August dive party!

Eric

If its at all humanly possible, I'll be there for the party. It may be tough as I'll have the diveshop open by then, but it is the hottest month here as far as weather goes. I'll just have to see. Try to make plans to come down in May if you can. I look forward to seeing more pics. Have a good one, I'll stay in touch.
