Hi There,

I did 3 PADI specialities after my rescue course (Nitrox, Deep and Wreck). I am gonna continue with the Tec Rec 40, 45 and maybe 50 next month. Can I consider the Tec Rec courses as a speciality to apply for the Master Scuba Diver level?

Thanks
Ivan

I've never heard that question before - normally when divers get to the tech level, they don't care about MSD.

My TecRec teaching qualifications appear on my PADI PRO profile as 'authorized to teach'.... specialities, so I see no reason why they wouldn't count as speciality courses for a student also.

Hi Ivan,

My blunt answer would be: Who cares?

The MSD "certification" doesn't allow you to do anything new or different

Spend the $50 on some more dives instead

I fully agree, but as if it can count I have nothing specially to do, why not apply for it? That's why I post the question.

PS: Andy, I went to your place few years ago to dive with Johan and Steve :)

Thinking to go tech, hey? I don't think it counts as a specialty, but I'm probably wrong. Going back down to Johan's for your training? I won't be able to get back for a couple of years yet. Have fun!

Under the old Tec system (Basic, Level 1 & Tec Deep), I know of at least one person who used the Tec Basic certification on their MSD application and was accepted no problem, so I would gues the answer would be yes.

Because it's a waste of $50 that could be used for equipment, training, diving, donating to charity or lighting a cigar with

It's only a waste if the payer thinks it is. A rather subjective question, that. If you're going for MSD, you might think about Navigation (that was fun) or Search and Recovery as other options (I want to do that). Funny, I thought your name was Evan (as Steve called you). Guess it's a pronunciation thing.

Hey Rik! Good to read you here! Yep that's Ivan or Yvan but with an english pronunciation it sounds different and with Steve pronunciation it is Evan. No problem for me, underwater it is always the right pronunciation :) Unfortunately I won't go back to Johan soon, I am heading to Manado mid July to mid august. Next time when you are going to Johan, send me an email, we can try to match our plan. It will be a great pleasure to continue with them and meet you again.

Yep, for Tech no interest with MSD but there are some nice specialities and Rik you are right Navigation can be one of them :) Anyway, the next step will be Tec Deep (40, 45 & 50). I'll do navigation with Johan and hope to do some Wreck penetrations again there. I miss the USS New-York.

I have the MSD card and it doesn't mean anything.
Waste of money? Hard to say to be honest. I never had the opportunity to use the skill/techniques that I picked up from the courses(Search & Recovery and Netvigation).
Should be diving with Johan /Steve soon.
Looking forward to USS New York.
