Maybe you guys misunderstood me... or maybe I'm misinformed. As I understand it, once you have done the requisite number of specialities (and Rescue and 50 dives), you then have to apply for the PADI MSD card, which costs you $50. That's what I'm saying is a waste of money

Time taken: 5 minutes (as long as it takes to complete a single form)

Money spent: $50 (the cost of the card)

The question of value is debatable. The card isn't a qualification... so it doesn't allow the diver to 'do' anything new. For some people, that means it has no value. However, it does recognize a cumulation of training and experience. It provides a benchmark of minimum experience (50 logged dives) and incorporates proof of training up to Rescue Diver level. That benchmark can help the diver deal with difficult 'certification focused' dive operations and also provides some limited proof of experience in the event that the diver doesn't have their log book handy.

It being a 'waste of money' is an entirely personal perspective. It's wise to remember that every individual has different motivating factors in their diving. Some people percieve a lot of value in having their training, effort and experience formally recognized. Other don't.

I have the MSD card... and before I got to Pro & tech levels, I found it useful because it allowed me to carry a single card in my wallet that gave me access to a more complete spectrum of diving when I was on work trips etc (when I wouldn't otherwise be carrying multiple cards and/or a logbook).

Hi Exposure

Short answer, yes it does. If you register your MSD in Asia pacific you can get the MSD for free by downloading the voucher from PADI's website.

Only carrying one card is a pretty slim benefit IMO... and if you're diving with a PADI shop, they can look it up

Anyway, think we've flogged this to death yet again. But just to wrap it up:

Some people percieve a lot of value in having their training, effort and experience formally recognized

For these people, feel free to Paypal me $50 & send me the completed MSD form; I will send them a nice certificate with their name & a photo of a fish on it via return e-mail, and I will donate $25 to a worthy charity on their behalf!

Ah, see. There is your error. There is no fish on the official cerificate

Did they take away the knowledge development part of the Master Scuba Diver rating?

(Who knew?)

Hey Rik! Good to read you here! Yep that's Ivan or Yvan but with an english pronunciation it sounds different and with Steve pronunciation it is Evan. No problem for me, underwater it is always the right pronunciation :) Unfortunately I won't go back to Johan soon, I am heading to Manado mid July to mid august. Next time when you are going to Johan, send me an email, we can try to match our plan. It will be a great pleasure to continue with them and meet you again.

Yep, for Tech no interest with MSD but there are some nice specialities and Rik you are right Navigation can be one of them :) Anyway, the next step will be Tec Deep (40, 45 & 50). I'll do navigation with Johan and hope to do some Wreck penetrations again there. I miss the USS New-York.

Hm the nav spec was the prerequisite for my rescue

I totally agree with you Devon. Thanks for all these information. There is an email for question with the vaucher, so I'll send them an email as tec courses can be out of scope for MSD.

Centrals: Say hello to Johan, Steve and all divemasters there. you are lucky.
