There is nothing that precludes a NAUI instructor from teaching or using DIR gear setups. Policy states that instructors must be similarly equipped as their students, but doesn't go into any detail about it, except that when students are using open circuit, so must the instructor.

Thanks all for the responses. It's good to hear that the training world isn't so anal as to reject a better way. At least in this case!

Otter:
I called PADI and asked about teaching O/W with a HOG rig. Their response was as long as it was with a single tank filled with air, there was no problem.
Did you happen to ask where it said that you could not teach in twins?

Sloth:
I did a SSI rescue course in a BP/W, long hose, and bungie secondary. The only thing I left out was the crotch strap to make it a little easier on the guys that had to remove my gear.
When I did my PADI Rescue course, the instructor loved the fact that I brought a different configuration to the class, and asked me to dive it like I normally do, including crotch strap. When I suggested going sans strap, he said, "Why? So these guys don't know how to rescue you on a real dive?"

Good point.

(NOTE: I'm not DIR)

Actually it suggests in the PADI Wreck Specialty Instructor Manual that the Instructor could wear twins so he doesnt break the rule of thirds as he can only penetrate with two students at a time

melfox26:
Did they specifically say "air"?

Mel

Yes..".. As long as the students are using a single cylinder with air there is no reason why they cannot use this type of setup as they are being trained to use it. "

Remember, my question was specifically towards O/W class...I haven't looked, because I am not that interested, but with the recent changes in Nitrox standards, it may be possible to introduce Nitrox on Dive 4.

Nope. Again since I was asking specifically about Open Water students, I didn't perceive a single cylinder to be an issue. In the GSP, under Equipment Requirements, item 1B says "compressed gas cylinder and valve"...implying singular....

Is the GUE Open Water class going to start students in doubles?

Even though PADI allows 7' hose and donating primary, you still have to teach while wearing a snorkel, correct? Cause you have to demonstrate such required skills as snorkel/regulator exchange. Or do you put it on to demonstrate, but don't wear it at all other times?

No. But my inquiry was regarding the Instructor wearing twins, not the student. I would (of course) not have an open water student in twin bottles.
Regarding the snorkel, teach the skills necessary per the standard, then store the snorkel in a pocket. Standards require that the snorkel be on the student (& instructor) but do not specify where.
