From this, which was applicable until I stopped renewing with PADI in 2018. Just share the same content I did and include a screen grab of the first page for the updated version.

The newer version is 2.04, dated Rev 05/22.
All the standards you quote are still there, plus the one I quoted in post #53, plus the requirement for Dive 4 that it be planned and executed by the students, "with instructor guidance as appropriate." The point is to cut the students loose to plan and execute a deep dive, and not do it for them.

I took it, it’s an okay class for planning and basic deep skills like shooting an SMB, and rigging a drop tank. Mine covered gas planning, which was probably the most worthwhile portion of it.

I would have liked to see it include an intro to twins, or incorporate NITROX. That said though it was definitely our NDL that caused us to terminate the dives and not gas consumption

It wasn’t a useless course, it’s just not really maximizing its potential.

Unless that has been added to the course, adding that is sadly a standards violation. I asked.

Your instructor went above and beyond.

DSMB in a deep course is a standards violation? (Sorry, left the D off it)
When I was teaching, yes. I specifically asked HQ about DSMB deployment

Assuming DSMB is not required by standards (I don't have access to them), then including it is teaching above standards and is highly desired. In contrast, failing to pass a student because of poor DSMB skills would be wrong. It sounds like HQ may have misunderstood you.

Nope. It was a conversation at DEMA. There was no pass fail as I understood that. I just wanted to require them to attempt to deploy it and then ascend taking in line. Just open water stuff at that point (but not in the past).

hmm.

I know the area i took the course in can get some pretty gnarly currents even down to the ocean floor. Could be a local thing, could be a shop thing.

Regardless, I got to shoot 4 of them from as far down as 120ft. All in all good skill to learn, and they saved me from having to take the PADI DSMB Course

The DSMB course is fluff, so I think you got a 2+ for 1, as doing what you describe is more than you'd get from that course.

It is only a standards violation if the added skill is required for certification.
