So why does not-for-profit NAUI also charge $30 for a replacement C-card ?

Churches are non-profit as well. Non-profit has very little to do with how much money an organization can generate. They can pay salaries, have assets, and have a ton of cash in the bank, and still be non-profit.

They also pay no taxes! They have to meet certain requirements, but that does not appear to be that difficult.

Let's make some ScubaBoard.com C-Cards, confirming that the lost c-card did exist but only charge $10 :D

Ya mean that even a non-profits can be scum-sucking, greedy, rip off scam artists. :)

I guess it wasn't clear from my earlier post that I don't consider "profit" to be a 4 letter word.

The only issue with having a jr advanced card is that some ops may use the jr depth limit of 70 ft. If he wants to go deeper get the aow replaced or take the rescue class as has already been suggested.

I don't have problem with profits. I don't even have a problem with them charging for a new card. I will have no problem if they charged a 'reasonable' fee..(say $10)

(Yes, I also do not like those *damn* oil companies making gazillion dollar profits on an 'essential' commodity).

I would agree that $30 seems steep, but I also have to wonder just how much money these companies generate, truly. Even if their books, dvds, and card replacements are inflated due to saturating a niche market, they still have to actually sell these things (books can be borrowed, videos copied, logging isn't mandatory, and my buddy never had a c-card - he just has the printed certificate for AOW he received from his instructor 15 years ago..)....
Imagine if we had to pay monthly dues, or seasonal licensing, like some other recreational membership organization.

(Do PADI instructors have to pay a portion of their training fees back to PADI?)

It seems that most agencies or entities will charge you for a replacement card. My gym will charge me $25 to renew a lost card. My building will charge me the same if I lose my ID card. There is a photo on the ID card but not on my gym card. In fact, they replaced the magnetic strip on my gym card because it wore out for free, while I stood there and I think it took them 30 seconds. Of course, that piece of plastic that the strip is on must be very expensive.

Most people are talking about a "REPLACEMENT" card meaning you lost it or in some way were irresponsible and require services to correct "YOUR" error.

Concerning the lad and his C-Card......this is an up-date from PADI. No further training required and no cards were lost or requested. PADI should say....Happy Birthday....enjoy diving as an AOW.

Then the bubble popped and the dream was over.....................

The fact that he is now 15 + should not cost any $$. If he was to be arrested at 75 feet by the Scuba Police I'm sure ID and his current Jr. Card would suffice:D
