Walter is correct, unless one of the selected Adventure Dives is Dry Suit, in which case a confined water session is required.

Some instructors might offer a confined water session for other dives, such as photo, night, buoyancy, search and recovery, etc.

If the instructor is unfamiliar with the student, he might choose to conduct an assessment session in the pool.

I did Peak Perf. Buoyancy as part of my AOW, but no pool work. Later I took the specialty course in PPB and there was cosiderable pool work before the dives.

AOW works much differently than OW. Since you're already certified there's no general need to coddle you in confined water. :) Unless as said there some particular objective it is useful for.

Mine was split between someones deck, the beach, and mostly we just dove.

My experience is that PADI AOW allows you to expand your dive experiences beyond OW. As was mentioned before, you are already certified to dive so don't (shouldn't) require the "safety" of a confined water environment. It is all about getting in the water and doing things that build upon the skills you learned in OW, and expanding your experience level.

It's an online option at padi.com. I did my OW cert on padi.com and felt double charged when I payed 375 for the elearner pool sessions at my LDS. The same LDS charges 150 bucks for OW pending you buy mask, snorkle, fins (at better than internet prices btw). So I wanted to know. Thanks for the info.

I guess I'm missing the part about where AOW fits in to all of this.

Because I wanted to know if taking it online would mean that I would have to pay for pool time in addition to check out dives.

Is that the point you were missing?
