PADI Specialties taken before AOW -- can they count as Adventure Dives?

I definitely hear you on this. The pursuit of AOW is inherently box-checky, I think, but the reminder to slow our collective roll is helpful.
 
It can be counted towards the AOW and don't let your LDS tell you it can;t. You might be better spending your money on another speciciality like deep diving, rather than the AOW. IMO, there is far more value to this certification.
 
5 specialties and you get the AOWD for "free".
That's how I did it.

More expensive, but you get more hours logged (especially 1 on 1 hours with an instructor) and you're starting out better at the skills that you're going to use.
