Because I wanted to know if taking it online would mean that I would have to pay for pool time in addition to check out dives.

Is that the point you were missing?

I guess so. It was a bit confusing where you were going back and forth between OW and AOW and things you paid for that were supposed to be included but weren't and cost more than you though they should have.

yeah I love the idea of doing the power points online at my leisure but renting private pool time is just so expensive.

there is no pool time for advance unless you are doing a drysuit dive as an elective, and that requires a dive in the pool to get used to it.
As for what the LDS charged you for the ow class. You state it was more to do it on line than if you did a standard class that the LDS charged $150. for..you still would most likely have to purchase a crewpack and dvd if you did the standard class and that costs $95.
They really should charge the same rate as the standard class. All the online is convience to do the academic at your pace , and as you know convience comes at a cost(what you paid PADI for the online portion of the course-$120.)
Did the LDS have a PRIVATE class for you for choosing the online version? If so that would explain the higher cost.

Yes it was private. I still had to buy the RDP Crewpack it was 40 dollars. All of this is whatever. I just wanted to know if AOW had poolwork and now I know it doesn't unless there is pool work for a specialty chosen. Thanks.

that "crewpack" you purchased was most likely NOT a ow crewpack.Probably was the enhancement pack that is required when you do an online course.Consist of a rdp/manual for rdp/log book and student record file. You require the rdp to plan your dives and a log book once you are certified.
Completing the confined water portion of the course explains why higher cost.Maybe you were on a time restraint and there was nothing scheduled that fit your needs. You got the private course on the cheap.I charge $600. for private academics and confined water whether you did the academics online or not,$269 if a regularly scheduled class not private. The 4 ow training dives are more..For a student doing the online academics it does not change my costs so there is no lowering the price of the course.

Our LDS offers a 3-4 hour pool session for AOW. It is optional. It is especially beneficial for PPB. We also do the compass navigation in the pool. It is also helpful for Search and Recovery (lift bag work).

Ok, maybe I should have been more clear. I felt like I was getting charged for every little aspect and wasn't really aware of that coming in to it (AS A BEGINNER). I do not think I was overcharged for what I got, merely shocked by the contrast in dollars between the more traditional route and my route. I was under a time crunch and the people at my shop were outstanding. You could charge 10,000 for a private open water certification oly, I don't care. Like I said I was more contrasting the elearner, private session, checkout dive, enhancement pack whatever versus the 150 gets you a c-card all inclusive deal on their schedule. My schedule is hectic so I just wanted to know if there were pool sessions so I could decide what to do without having to call my LDS and ask and then say ok, ill do it online. Christ, how does a simple post turn into this. I guess its because I let it. Sarcastic thanks oly5050user:dork2:

don't get your panties in a fit..just stated a fact that you got a good deal on the private course. You said you did not understand why there were costs differences.Totally understand about time crunch. It happens.
I simply was explaining why costs for class and learning materials were different from standard schedule class. If you think I was trying to be sarcastic you are VERY wrong, only tried to be helpful...my stating the costs for a private here in NY is to give you a comparision on what different geographic areas charge, because of different costs to do business and what the market will bear.I think you are really off base ..Have a nice day :)

There does not necessarily need to be pool work in the PADI AOW class. However, some can take place and can be beneficial. For instance, by practicing buoyancy control while taking photos of objects on the bottom of the pool, the diver can be better prepared to take photos in open water while avoiding contact with the reef, etc. I am sure I could come up with many more examples where confined water practice creates better divers.
