I am starting to pack for my upcoming trip to Cozumel. I am planning on using a large soft duffel for the equipment-I was thinking to minimize weight-but is that a good idea? It will need to be checked in. Am I risking breakage/damage? Would it be better to use hard sided or stiff-paneled luggage?

No guaranties, but I've used a soft-sided (canvas) Stahl Sac for years without any issues. I wrap my Reg setup in a big beach towel, wrapped around it like a burrito, then stuff that inside my BC, which I them tie up tight with the belts, then wrap up with my Fleece-lined Henderson. I make certain that the BC-Reg package is buffered by other soft or flexible stuff -- Fins, Booties, T-Shirts, etc. masks (I usually pack 2-3) I wrap in clothing or in the plastic cases they came in. Never had any breakage or losses. I don't carry any big photography equipment - my small digital Intova goes in my carry on. If you've got large expensive photography equipment, for that I would probably use the foam-lined hard case.

I always pack my bcd, wetsuit, and accessories in my Aqualung 850, which is a soft wheeled duffel, and carry on my regulator and computer. You shouldn't have any problems.

I use a stiff sided suitcase for two sets of equipment. It weighs right at 50# loaded. Regs/computers go carry on. The suitcase has 4 wheels on it and it makes the bag drag easier. I try to hide the fact that there is dive gear in my bags so nothing has a dive brand or flag on it. Had a hard sided suitcase mangled in January but all gear was fine. Good luck and safe travels.
safe travels,

I carry on what I don't want lost and check everything else, and because I only get one free checked bag. Being land based and in a divers mecca replacing lost or late gear shouldn't be a problem.

You still get a free checked bag?

I would highly suggest packing one change of clothes in carryon. I carry most critical items (regs, petrel, mask, mess, laptop of course) in carryon of course but had gotten out of the habit of packing a change of clothes in carryon. Two bags checked - Dive gear made it but no clothes did... Much my preference of course on a cave diving trip but rather awkward tromping about in Tulum heat in jeans!
