What an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime find. A rare, deep water creature -- and you knew what it was (or at least what sort of thing it was). I looked at the photograph you posted and wondered how on earth you thought it was a cephalopod . . . but you were entirely right.

Thank you for sharing this amazing experience with us!
I counted the segments and saw the beak, but it didn't look like a squid nor an octopus. The funny thing is, I've watched the segment from Planet Earth a dozen times and it didn't occur to me that a deep water creature like that would be on the surface. One more animal to add to the amazing encounters I've had lately.

I have to say, you and Merry seem to have a talent for running into the unusual. Very cool!

Any thoughts as to why it may have been at the surface? Did it seem injured?
Merry looked under its cloak and said the body was missing. There were a few Mola Molas in the current line we found it in.

That's absolutely amazing, my Son (5yrs) is gonna love the pictures as he has become quite a marine expert lately.....also dinosaurs.

How big was the squid?
It's not really a squid, but it is a cephalopod. Kinda like a Mantis shrimp is not really a shrimp. It was about the size of a baseball.

Wow! What an incredible find! You just never know what your going to encounter in the great Pacific.
