You realize that the locals don't pay the same rates we do, right? To call the taxi drivers "mafia" is, IMO, laughable and an insult to the Mafia. :D

So you are saying a group of people maintaining their complete control over a trade has no resemblance to the mafia. A group that puts out the call and gathers a team to stop buses that may be transporting people for hire by surrounding them and forcing the bus to stop and then holds them until everyone gets in a cab to leave? A group until very recently, had the politicians in their pockets like so many nickels and dimes? They are a pretty powerful union. In MX city, don't let them catch you driving Uber: Uber drivers attacked outside Mexico City airport as taxi drivers demonstrate

That being said a lot of taxi drivers DO charge tourists the set rates for Cozumel. I don't use a lot of cabs, but I have received correct charges many times by these hard working fellows. On the other hand, I do get mistaken for Mayan now and again....

I'm saying they don't do anything that unusual for a labor union protecting their revenue stream, and they haven't rubbed anyone out for crossing them as far as I know. I have yet to see any of them wielding a tommy gun and not once has a taxi driver told me "that's a nice little hotel you are staying at; it would be a shame if something were to... happen to it." Mafia? Hardly.

I think one of the bosses knocked the crap out of a subordinate the other day. Of course if done right, you don't know who the mafia is rubbing out these days.

Oddly I haven't seen a mob guy with a Tommy gun since I watched the untouchables again. (How far are you prepared to go?)

This is a nice car you have there. It would be shame if someone set fire to it. Maybe you should stop encroaching on our turf. Injuries & burning cars as taxi drivers clash in Mexico

And why would they say a word to you about it? You aren't the one that needs to be kept in line. You BUY a hotel and start giving rides to your customers. See how that goes. :poke:

And conflating labor unions and the mafia? I know. That is just a CRAZY thought. That NEVER happens.... :)

Sure it is a bit of hyperbole, but not as crazy as you make it out to be.

Crazy? Not crazy, just a bit ludicrous. Compared to the actual Mafia, these guys are real lightweights.

So you are on a campaign for literalness? Going to make conversation drab and boring. (whoops, more hyperbole....

You are the one that said they illegally charge you a different rate than set by law. So they use force and, according to you, engage in the organized theft from tourists, yet you think mafia is completely off base.

Fine, I will go along with you if it makes you happy. For now on I will try to only call them the Taxi Syndicate. :daydream:

Thanks. Making me happy is what it's all about... :D

Little off topic guys...the thread is about hotel and dive op recommendations not opinions about taxi fare.

Keep in mind I would like to keep the price below $3000 for the week ......including ...taxi/ferry,

Sorry. You did say taxi.....

We were just sitting up here trying to help:
