No.. Because experience doesnt make you better.

Your own initial OW course and subsequent dives after your course proves your statement wrong. You went from not knowing how to dive and the potential safety hazards of diving to knowing the basics and gaining experience via diving after your course.

psycho.... your hole is getting bigger and bigger... stop now or you'll need a bucket cause your digging yourself so deep your fixin to hit the water line.
and my octo works all the time... atleast till the point where i jump in the water.. i check my octo 2 times before i jump.

Hi All,
I'm a PADI instructor and I do teach having the long hose on the primary regulator and to donate that one. Why? 1st, it's a technique that will work in every gear configuration. Even if you normally breath off of a short hose primary, if someone unexpectedly takes it away from you, you have just donated your primary. People with alternate air sources like an AIR 2 or Octo Z have no choice but to donate the primary. 2nd, most technical agencies including PADI and NAUI teach you to donate your primary which now has a 5 - 7 foot hose. Why shouldn't the student learn to donate the primary from the beginning, so they don't have to relearn a life saving skill if they go into technical and/or cave? 3rd, I want my students to be comfortable with a regulator out of their mouths. Any diver who is not comfortable having the regulator out of their mouths IMHO shouldn't be diving. If someone chooses to purchase a system that has them breathing off of a short hose after one of my classes, I have no problem taking them back into the pool and working with them to master that system, INCLUDING getting them used to having a buddy breath off of the short hose while you breath off of the octopus - just in case their primary gets grabbed.
Two other points - Donating a long hose primary has been around long before DIR, and second, PADI allows you to teach an OW class with Hogarthian configurations.
Take care & Happy Holidays,
George

In the real world whatever method you prefer, donating your primary or alternate, whether octo or safe second, you had better be proficient and prepared to do both methods. Some divers might even have a small pony or spare air for out of air emergencies, yet a third method. Know what your buddy plans, but also plan for the unexpected.
You never know how others from the boat were trained or how they will react. Be proficient in either method and if an out of air emergency occurs you will be a lot less stressed.
The option is to risk death or serious injury.

HAHHAHA
Actually, the wife knows where my octo is and since I know where she is 98% of the time, I seriously doubt there would be any issue..

And we have both been NAUI AOW trained.. so.. buddy breathing and sharing and even going blind are all covered.. we dont panic.. ever..
I seem to have a bit of a break down with the written word... Please clear this up for me if you can.

If you already knew your own answer, why did you ask the original question?

Let's think about why would the cert agencies recommend NOT donating your primary?

Could it be that the concept of having 2 divers without a regulator in their mouth isn't safe (at least at the intro level)?

How many agencies actually recommend NOT donating the primary? I can think of exactly 1.

Guess we wont ever be diving together.
As stated before. I dont dive with anyone else. so you are correct!

So if I ever have a burst disk/O-ring/LP hose fail on me I need to quit diving??? You're not making much sense here.
If you take care of your gear, that shouldnt happen.. And if it did, you do have your backup right? So you are taking care of your own there.. now if the problem was on your tank, which is most likely not going to be your own tank, and that is the most common variable, then the fault isnt in you.. but at the same time, you wont be OOA right away.. Right? So can remain calm and people around you will have their octos ready for you..

O-rings can burst just fine even if theire brand spanking new..

Actually, if it were possible, I would of gone diving without the classes.. but it becomes a pain to get air fills and whatnot if you are not certified.. Ohh well..

No.. No holes here.

"We dont panic, EVER" - Famous last words..

Theres something about never saying never and some guy called Murphy
You worry too much about quotes.. Train more.

I call bull****. No way in hell that an instructor taught you to use your knife on somebody to keep them from stealing your primary regulator.
Come to texas. I will show you exactly where the training is held.
Not BS. Its for real. When someone is trying to pull my reg out of my mouth, they are effectively putting themselves before me.. Its my right to put myself exactly where I belong.. Way before them. Trust me. It was taught and I highly agree with it. .But then again, we are from Texas where we have Castle laws that most others dont understand..

I seem to have a bit of a break down with the written word... Please clear this up for me if you can.

If you already knew your own answer, why did you ask the original question?

I didnt know where people were getting this info and on all of our gear, not one has a primary reg on a long hose and they are all "Factory"..

So we had to ask as we are in the basic section and everyone here is talking about giving their primary but standard setups dont have the primary on a long enough hose.
