For me it depends on both the location and the dive activity. Specifically, the bottom on a lot of our dives off Vancouver Island is just gravel or muck with small rocks sticking out. I normally stay off the bottom, but if I'm taking macro photos here, I may touch a finger down to steady myself, or touch my fin tips down for more stability, especially if I'm taking video.
Then there are the times in current where I'll grab a bare rock while I compose and take the shot.
Mind you, I do the exact same things if I'm diving with a tank of air on my back.
(and yes, I check the bottom before I do that, but a lot of our sites are best described as 'bottom wasteland').
