Hi,

My bride and I will be staying with my cousin and his wife in Homosassa for a weekend the end of February. Both he and his wife have to work on Saturday, so that means we have a day to kill. We fly out at 2:20 Sunday afternoon for Cancun.

If you were in Homosassa and had one Saturday morning to dive where would you go?

Thanks.

Bill.

Go spend the day with the manatees. Book a little snorkling trip for the morning and then hit the state park for the boat ride in the afternoon. There is a shop up there that does a snorkle with the manatees and then diving the river up there or something like that. I'm sure you will be able to get more info on it from other people here.

Drift dive the Rainbow River or go over to the Blue Grotto near Williston. I'd enjoy doing either again.

I believe you should only snorkel with the Manatees -- they are spooked by scuba.

The Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park is good for non-divers too.

American Pro Divers there in Crystal River offers a manatee snorkel trip where afterwards you dive in King Spring right near by. You have the option of getting a Manatee specialty c-card from PADI as well.

Alternative, Blue Grotto is close but not *right* there. So is Devil's Den. Blue Grotto is good for at least 2 dives. Devil's Den is one of those things you've gotta do at least once.

There's also Manatee Springs State Park where you can do a couple decent shallow dives too. Do a guided Cavern dive.

Beyond that Ginnie Springs is a neat place. Good for more than just one or two dives. Probably 5 or 6 or 7 at least. So it's a must do, but not something that you can just do in one morning.

I will second the Rainbow River drift dive. If you can get with the right operator, you can do two really decent drift dives. I've even done them at night. Water clarity is second to Disney's Living Seas.

Lots of good suggestions but I prefer Bird's Underwater as the shop to use.

I don't think we can dive in Manatee Springs when the manatees are there. Better to check on that before going there to be sure.
