Thank TSandM & Rawls, I am located between 2 So. Bay dive spots (bout a mile either way) I just need to be there when they are, minor clock change. I also need more time in the water(a lot more)getting active exercise. i found out today that bobbing around in the surf was easy compared to trying to swim in it. now that I have basic gear and need exercise I don't need an excuse to go:D

mmmmmmmmm kaaaay! just went surfing, DSS site that is. I seem to remember saying something awhile back when i was complaining about costs and didn't want expensive bells and whistles.
BW style is it. still not cheap but what you see is what you see. switching from single to doubles would still require another bp and another wing. so the only advantage I see is if you get a leak. so who knows how to do a field repair on a jacket bc? Who knows how to repair a wing? I never worried about a flat tire until i got one. now i'm worried about a flat bc and i haven't even decided which one i want. I should just make my own:rofl3::rofl3:

No it wouldn't.

SS backplates are great for single tanks, but I'd prefer an AL plate for LP108's, so for me that statement is true.

i'm guessing with doubles you don't need the weight of the ss
.
However, after the thrashing I just got trying to make a beach entry with snorkel gear alone. I have to listen to age and forget any idea of even MORE weight until i can master the least amount.

the sport monster has a special i cannot ignore (provided i get settled) on a jacket bc. if they will work with me, I may upgrade to a back inflate w/integrated alternate for about the same cost as a bp/w without octo.

i am glad everyone said don't buy now, AND that i got stiffed by the ins ppl so i couldn't.
it gave me time to look around and make up my mind then change it, and change it again.

If i make a bad choice now, it was meant to happen. And for all I know, i could get called back to work and spend the next 5 years looking at my dive gear and wondering if i could call in sick. (work would be nice, my 401 is weak)

You prefer it, but it's not required.

I use a steel plate for singles and aluminum doubles and an aluminum plate for steel doubles. I find good trim to be easier that way.

However, it's completely optional, not mandatory. Many people use the same plate regardless of tanks.

You are more than welcome to hump my double steel hundreds and aluminum 40 down or up the stairs at Redondo tomorrow... just to get a feel for it, of course :P

I just want to add this one thing. If you haven't gotten trained yet, I would look into the L.A. County certification. I've heard good things about them as an organization. I admit to not having much first hand knowledge, but everything I've seen tells me they're an A+ organization. Living in L.A., you have a good opportunity there.
