Santa gave me a pass to purchase a dive computer within reason. I can not afford to spend $800 on a computer so I was looking at the Oceanic Geo which is on sale for $299.95. What are your thoughts on this item? Is it worth the cost? I can probaly afford somewhere around $400 tops at this time, are there any others out there better that fit this price range?

Dont know too much about them so any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I see that you have to buy the data cord and PC cd are not included in the price of the computer, nor other computers i looked at. Is this the normal to sell them seperatly?

Also I am looking for a wrist type "everyday" style.

I really like the Oceanic/Aeris line-up, lots of features and you can dive them fairly aggressively (if you choose to, something a Suunto won't allow). The GEO display is kinda of small for my taste though and I prefer the VEO series. The VEO 250 compares favorably feature-wise with the GEO wristwatch and will run you ~$125 less money.
Divers Supply had a great special on them just before Christmas and you can probably still get the deal with a phone call.

Yes, that's standard practice.

I think the TUSA IQ-700 or DiveRite Nitek is a better computer. More durable, easier to read and use, the buttons are simpler, and you can eventually get a bungee mount for it. There are a number of variants of this computer under several names and I believe all are made by Seiko.

I have the Aeris Manta, which is identical to Oceanic Geo. It is easy to learn operating it, specially as it comes with a waterproof quicksheet that you may take under water for the first dives, until you memorize it.

A nice feature that not all computers have is the free diving mode.

I just picked up a Geo during the sale. Haven't dived/dove/diven with it yet, but looking at the features, it is very similar to the Veo hockey puck sized Oceanics, which my wife has.

In reading up on computers, seems to me that you'll get a lot of variety of recommendations, and everyone has their favorites, so I'm thinking you can't go wrong with the Geo.... or the D4..... or the Tusa, etc.!

I got the black/yellow and thinks it looks cool too. Large, but not too large to wear everyday.

ooops. duplicate post. How to delete???

I carry my GEO as a back-up, but I have used it as my primary just to get comfortable with using it and an SPG. Like any other new computer you have to learn how to operate it, but once you do the GEO is not that difficult. Although, the user's manual can be a bit confusing. I really didn't have a problem reading the screen. Here's a couple of pics to compare the GEO's overall size, screen size, and graphics size with a full-size puck computer (Oceanic VT3).
