Dear DD,

How many times have you flown from LA?

Dear DD,

How many times have you flown from LA?

I am so with you. Non-stop to Cancun is so much nice in my opinion. That change of planes in Houston or Dallas we used to do was a pain in the rump, like the FT Worth stock yards I imagine.

Apologies if someone has already mentioned this, but the IRONMAN Cozumel is scheduled for November 27, 2016. That is the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The probable reason that there are no flights available on Monday is because they are already taken by the folks competing or supporting someone in the IRONMAN. Thanksgiving week is a bitch for Cozumel; unless of course you are competing in the IRONMAN.

Don't they pretty much shut down the island (and the diving) during any IRONMAN events ? (there have been prior threads on the 'bad for diving' fallout anytime the island does IRONMANs and other similar events)

I suppose there are pros & cons to the idea of flying non-stop to Cancun. In my less extensive experiences, I have not had problems connecting in either Texas city going unless there was weather - ususally such that kept me from getting out of Lubbock. After this years long Indian Summer, we could still have early winter weather next November - never know? Clearing I&C going or returning can be a drag anywhere of course, some worse than others.

Today's view of flights is certainly premature, but today the non-stop to Cancun is higher than the one connection plan into Coz I found yesterday, but the $220 one-way I found then is not there today. It's really too early to know what will happen, but that was a sweet fare.

Even if I flew into Cancun, I think I'd still want to fly out of Coz. Today, United is quoting fares for that Monday, but they're pricy - like $486 on the one connection, higher yet on the non-stop from Cancun.

These fares are moving targets of course, and the flights are certainly not guaranteed to happen a year from now.

No the problem was the airlines were not quoting much that far out. More choices are available today, but I wouldn't want to be there for Iron Man. He has to be there tho, so he can find fares now - maybe cheaper in time.

Well, I agree with that, but for me that is Mayair. I guess there is no way in H-E-double toothpicks that you can get yourself down to 44# in luggage not in your lap? Or low enough that paying for the overage at $3 a pound isn't murder?

Heck the tickets are like 650 pesos turista, so like $36 and you can buy the return at their office by the Ched. That isn't much more than the bus and the ferry and saves you two hours of travel. Ever since I got the hairy eyeball for checking in 56 minutes before my flight in cancun, we have been taking the earlier Mayair and getting breakfast at the TGI Fridays. Only bear of that is SW's counter isn't open for check in, so we ended up waiting to be the first to check in.....

I have been there for the half-iron man. It was challenging driving across town then. Plenty of extra egg yokes available all over town.... ;)

Question about luggage on Mayair. If I have one suitcase at 50 pounds, one backpack (small size) at about 15 pounds, and a laptop, about how much might this be?
Would it still be worth it to fly Mayair or just bus/ferry it?
Do they count a backpack and laptop or just a suitcase?
I like Dave's travel plans of LAX-CUN, but only if nonstop and not a redeye, and arriving early in the afternoon to give enough time to get to COZ not to late.

Right with you BlueSteel.

I failed to mention non stop. If a stop is included I might exclude Cancun.

Dear Dandy Don,

One last time. If you have a non stop flight to Cancun vs a Change of plane into Cozumel, your overall trip will be shorter and less susceptible to major delays.

PLUS, IF YOU ARE COMING FROM THE WEST COAT IT ALWAYS TAKES A DREADED "RED EYE" DEPARTURE. Have you not seen the passed out zombies at the Cozumel gate…you don't have to guess where they came from!

I heard you the first time. I value your opinions even if I don't automatically endorse them.

A non-stop flight to Cancun should avoid flight problems, as long as you don't mind the bus & ferry and the crossing is nice or opt for the shuttle flight and are a light packer. Flights into Coz will include a connection so you probably can't get reasonable hours & flights. I haven't done a study, no - but it's always worth looking at choices, which are ever changing.

I'm always so tired (redeye out of Seattle) that I almost always pay extra to fly into Coz. Think I've changed my mind after the last trip home and the almost 2 hours wait in line for customs though. Dave and Chief make excellent points. It's not a big deal to get from CUN to the island (done it numerous times) and it takes no more time, sometimes less. Save money, more time on vacation. :) I think I'd rather be on that comfy bus where I can get a bit of a nap than in the airport anyway. What was I thinking?! I'll look at Mayair, but I bet once we save a couple hundred on airfare we'll be hesitant to give it back LOL
