Looking at going down at Thanksgiving and the week after (so Wednesday or Thursday to Monday). United has started booking this timeframe, but for some reason there are no flights available the day I want to return (monday 12/5). Plenty on Sunday and Tuesday.... Are the flights just not set up yet? Weird that they are taking reservations through I think the 7th or 8th but this one Monday is unavailable, when I would have thought Sunday would be the tough day... Any thoughts? Just be more patient?

I'm figuring week after Thanksgiving probably looking at $500 p/p. But just curious as to why this specific day is blocked out currently

Yeah, it's just too early to book. You find your best air fares a month or two in advance if you're flexible. I know, we like to plan ahead on our biggest joy rides - but even if you do book now, no airline is required to keep the schedule. They change whatever they want to, so be very sure your email address is on your reservation, watch for their emails, and check your reservation record often. Then you have to change plans with your hotel, dive op, dog sitter, work, etc. They may well change your flights to different days, or worse - to impossible itineraries. The most notorious are those that give you one hour to clear I&C on a connecting flight - virtually impossible, or leave you sitting in an airport for 8 hours or more.

That said, you can find flights now - if you want to set up a hypothetical plan or go ahead and book - then see what the airline does to you. I guess you'd want to fly out of LAX? Checking the Matrix site, I generally uncheck the option for overnight literariness - but coming from so many time zones away, sometimes you really need to do a red eye with middle of the night flights - just avoid overnight airport layovers.

This far out, the fares are awful looking at 10-14 night trips: $565 leaving on Monday, $580 on Tuesday, $695 Wednesday, $1048 Thursday. Looking at Wednesday to Monday tho, when you select those dates for $695 something evil happens and the fares go up! So instead for $695, it says $1048 - huh? And that's with a long layover in Mexico City - boo!

Obviously something is not working right. Ok ok, I found the problem. By looking for one-way plans from Cozumel to LAX on Monday, December 5. It's too soon. They're not quoting flights after December 2.

You can play with the times and flights and in a few days find your December 5 flights, but you can't believe it even if you find a Monday return - as they can change.

Yep, maybe just a day or two early for your return right now. But, as DandyDon stated, if you are purchasing the tickets then best prices will be a month out.

I on the other hand wanted to use miles with United so I had to jump on it right when United loaded the flight schedule (to get the saver mile price). So just a few days ago I booked my CZM flights with United miles. Looks like we will miss each other as I'm flying out Nov 17th and returning Nov 23 (had to be home for football and turkey).

Here's to diving next November :)

Thanks Don and John - wondering if the month out theory works for post Thanksgiving week? I know I am going to pay a bit of a premium, but that's the price for high season (and realizing my 500 p/p is probably 200 too low.... or more...) At any rate, I am somewhat flexible but do need to be there by Friday for non diving reasons, and would like to stay after the 4th so I can celebrate my 50th with a margarita on an island....

It's a gamble with the airlines, geared to supply and demand. Each one has a number of planes and when not grounded for service, move them across the continent and beyond. If a month or two in advance they see they have a lot of empty seats going the way you want to go at the times you prefer, they'll lower fares to fill them - as once flown empty, those are a loss. If the planes are filling up nicely, they raise fares to increase income on demand. As I said, you "find your best air fares a month or two in advance if you're flexible."

If you have to be there by Friday, then you do have to plan with little flexibility - and arrive a day or two before. The best you can do is watch fares & schedules, book when you see lower fares on good plans - with buffer time allowed in case of problems, and hope they don't change their plane plans much. There are fare watch sites to alert you on changes.

Yesterday, looking at flying in on Thursday looked extremely high. Today, you can book American Air for $220 one-way - a bargain maybe. The flights look good, leaving LAX @ 6am, one connection of 59 minutes, arrive Coz @ 3:41pm. You could grab that now and worry about returns and possible changes later. Or book it for Wednesday to increase your flexibility. If the airlines change their schedules, then you can negotiate then.

In low season they normally only fly a few days a week. Having flown many times from LAX to Cozumel, I would highly suggest a non stop to Cancun followed by bus and ferry which will usually get you to Cozumel faster than a plane change anywhere.

I wouldn't think week after Thanksgiving is low?

I would not go thru Cancun if I could get a nice, one connection itinerary into Coz, but that's me.
