not a true gripe, just very curious to know why ...

My gear looks like it has done the 1000 dives it has done it looks used, I do not have a single piece that coordinates together, colour or brand, I have cressi fins, tusa mask, a snorkel somewhere, three different cylinders, scubapro wettie, a couple of custom mades in varying thicknesses, sea quest bcd, a probe bcd, a whole heap of spares that could kit up at least two visitors, mares regs that i have had since i was 14yrs old i love them they are nice and heavy and i know them they know me and boy are they faded but do they work they work as good in 1 meter to 10 meters to 65meters very nicely, the dove the aaron ward, the kanawa, truk lagoon, indonesia they love to dive, they don't care how they look, i just make sure they get serviced and cleaned and washed well. But hey that is just me i don't care how i look if my gear is shiny and new or old and tatty as long as it works and is safe.

FreeFloat:
I am personally working very hard at dulling the shiny PST finish on my steel Christmas-present tank. After 60ish dives it's starting to go away, and a few small scratches are adding to its personality.

A couple dives in salt water will dull the shiny PST finish right away. :D

Black everything works for me, Havent found a scratch yet that a bit of black texta wont fix...

I only have 16 logged dives. My goal is for my gear to show a little wear. (ie. lots more dives!)

some divers are so concerned that their gear is scratched or spotted. it's not a fashion show ... spiffy looking gear proves you are not diving.
Well, that nice nitrox-green paint on my tanks is pretty scuffed up now, but I clean and treat my hoses regularly--our technician commented after my last annual service that the reg still looks pretty new .

In other words, I don't mind dings where they won't affect safety. I treat my car the same way.

And now that I think about it, I don't tend to notice the condition of the gear on the diver next to me--it's his conduct I'm interested in.

This life is so long, so marvellous, so unexpectedly weird. How could you ask for anything more?

Well "worn" with a fine patina from use = badge of honor (well maybe not honor exactly but you know what I mean:D)

Abused, banged up, mistreated = badge of shame

Brand new, shiny, color coordinated = Newbie, or more money than sense, too soon to know for sure.

One reason could be that physical damage is evidence of harsh treatment and occasional failure to look after your gear. Couldn't agree more that it's not a fashion show, but it's good to have well weathered, undamaged gear reflecting your pride in, and commitment to, maintaining it.

Some of us look to upgrade periodically and damage takes off resale too!

We color co-ordinate just so I can tell my stuff from his.

Some of it has to do with new divers being afraid that if you get a little scratch on your tank it will explode and you will die a firey death. The color-coordinating thing probally has a lot to do with the female divers. I love color coordinated dive stuff, but I'm a girl, I'm supossed to. Anyway, it has been my experience that there aren't many pink masks out there (kidding).

Plus, this stuff is the only real line of defense between you and death most of the time, take care of it so it works when you need it. And when you take care of things they tend to look better. ;)

Well I guess you think you told me, eh? :11:

not sure why, but that line still has my giggling. Might be the muscle relaxer, but it's still funnier than all ever.. ;)

my .02 , I take very good care of my stuff, but my bcd is faded, I do dive about 2 or 3 times a week and it is a year old, but I still consider it in good shape, I've got a hole the size of a quater in my wet suit (scars from the Great White encounter :eyebrow: ) I've gone through 2 masks this year, my fins are a little faded, same with the boots,my new hood has 100 little self made vent holes all over it, and nothing matches... In fact, I'm thinking I'm liking ScubaJennys idea with her pink and flowered gardening gloves... adds character, plus no worries for mistaken ID...

However, you have to admit there is a certain level of humor involved when on a boat with other divers and their in a brand name stuff from head to toe, even their bags match their wet suit colors.... ( and everyone always asks why I'm always smiling.....hehehehehehe, gota love em)
