some divers are so concerned that their gear is scratched or spotted. it's not a fashion show ... spiffy looking gear proves you are not diving.

Probably the same damn reason people put a huge fin on the back of a front wheel drive, 4 cyl Honda or Mazda.... because it just looks sooo cool....

Or why so many DINCs (dual income no clue) own a SUV that never sees an offroad environment.

Hauling dive gear in a more luxurious manner - however i dont have such a vehicle.

There are certain reasons why you wouldnt want deep gouges or other places where stress concentrations could occur, those are to be avoided, but i do agree that keeping it pretty and nice is not a real excuse for something that will get some amount of abuse during its life.

I got a little disappointed when my pri. second got scratched up, (after a returning from a shore dive in HEAVY surge), basically because I take pretty good care of my stuff. As a matter of fact, I'm nearly fourty and still have the 'Tonka' trucks I played with when I was a kid. One of them looks brand new... Can you say 'anal'?

On the other hand, when I was first buying gear I was told that the best way to evaluate a diver's experience was by looking at how well their gear was 'coordinated'. If everything was in matching colors, you could bet that they were new to the sport and more into looking good than getting quality gear.

I like my gear to look nice, but not at the expense of using it for its intended purpose. So it gets a little faded or frayed or dinged, that is just a sign that I am putting it to it's intended use.

Sorry but you are wrong dude!!! I take care of my gear just like everything else I own. I am not worried what I look like and I don't mind if it gets scratched but I try like hell to keep it in mint condition...

I too want my gear to be in mint operational condition. I do not care about its appearance.

That reminds me, I forgot to dry & wax my BP after last weeks dive. Oh well, maybe I'll just drill a couple more holes in it.

True! More experienced divers not only rarely have color coordinated gear, but a lot of times the brand names don't even all match up.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as all teh gear is in teh same uniform condition, as long as it's also serviceable even if it looks like heck, that's fine by me. There's a world of difference between a faded BC or wing, and one with threads and broken webbing hanging off.......
