i didn't know it was possible to exhale through your nose while inhaling through your mouth?!?

You might just have stumbled upon reverse circular breathing. :D

Anyway, I think what you might have been doing was to revert to exhaling with your nose at times. Try relaxing and taking nice long slow breaths (on land) with your mouth. Watch your belly and chest expand as you fill your lungs completely. Take note of what that feels like because not only might it solve your problem, it might prolong your dive times too.
