Thanks guys! It’s interesting hearing about all kinds of gear, even fancy rebreathers I wish I could afford. I wound up not packing my pony regulator into my overfilled tiny convertible so it looks like no pony for Venice. Buddies would be nice though...

This sounds like one of those situations where a floating hookah system might be practical. Of course, if it runs out of gas you'd have been better off with a single tank and no pony ;)
 
Unfortunately the red tide is so bad here now my dives have been confined to the condo pool. The ocean is full of DEATH.

Try it next week a night with a full moon :) At least around here, it is phosphorescent. Some of the most amazing things I've seen on this planet were during the red tide.

Really you went diving in it? Isn’t it dangerous to dive with all the dead stuff? Didn’t it also make you cough?
