In its first definitive statement since it said on July 2 that the Keys would likely see some oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on Friday that a new analysis shows the Florida Keys and the rest of South Florida are unlikely to experience any effects from the remaining surface oil.

No oil has leaked from the Deepwater Horizon well in 15 days, and the surface oil that remains is hundreds of miles away from the Loop Current that runs down Florida's west coast, wraps around the Keys and then heads up the east coast. The oil is in the process of degrading.

"This announcement further confirms what Florida's reconnaissance efforts have long suggested -- that oil is not likely to reach the Loop Current," said state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Michael Sole. "Our focus remains on response and recovery; however, the threat of oil reaching Florida's shores is dramatically reduced with each day the well is capped."

According to NOAA, a large Loop Current eddy, called Eddy Franklin, has pinched off and detached from the Loop Current. As of Sunday, Eddy Franklin was more than 100 miles from the nearest surface oil associated with the Deepwater Horizon well.

Until the Loop Current fully reforms -- which is not projected to occur for several months -- there is no clear way for oil to be transported to South Florida. At that point, it's expected that the majority of remaining surface oil will have dissipated.

Maybe if Becky's rants had been gone unchecked this person wouldn't be going to the Keys next month. IJS...
It's sad for anyone to think someone would use a single thread in an online forum as the sole source of investigation for their entire vacation :rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:

A single thread regarding the Nekton debacle has saved countless others who only "heard it here" because Nekton failed to inform their upcoming customers they'd ceased operations.

Did Nekton enjoy their Keys vacation? :D

Actually, given the situation ScubaBoard is in right now, I find it pretty disturbing that Pete would suggest suing anyone for a free speech issue...
Shouting "Fire!" in a crowded room is not protected by free speech.

ScubaBoard has never encouraged or allowed systematic attacks on any user or business entity. If you feel that a user or business entity should be punished, please resort to the appropriate legal system. It's not that we are averse to controversy since that's part and parcel of any discussion group. In fact, where there is controversy, we often contact the other party so we CAN hear both sides of the story. However, we refuse to let someone use ScubaBoard to wage economic war with anyone. If you suspect anyone of doing this, please report any and all of these problematic posts by using the

button, so that we can see any patterns.

 What is the correlation??

The media jumped on this from day one and blew it way out of proportion. They deserve to be sued for economic losses just as BP should have to pay for ecological ones. It is my estimation that the media, coupled with mindless hysteria, have cost Florida far more than we could calculate.

Yelling Fire in a crowded place is not protected free speech because it can cause death through panic. You say the media deserves to be sued for what they said about the oil spill. How could what the media said in this instance cause anyone to die?

What the media said can cause loss of revenue, which is exactly what the SB thread could have cost Gundi. What's good for the goose is good for the gander...

The difference, and it's huge: user generated content as opposed to media generated content. ScubaBoard is being sued over what others have said. No agent of ScubaBoard, including myself, has generated any negative posts about the person in question.

I am wondering though... do think that the coverage by the media was fair and balanced?
