I could tell you...but......

:whatever: and I thought switching from poodle jacket to BP/W was going to fix the 'cool' issue. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.

If you want to be really cool, do Mask On Sideways. :cool2: Then you'd be truly elite...

On a related note, I had a student do Mask Upside Down during the mask-clear drill in the pool sessions. For a minute I thought he was screwing with me, but upon surfacing and asking him about it, he was genuinely clueless and just thought he had an ill-fitting, leaky mask that hurt his nose.

He and I had a bit of a "come to Jesus" regarding the fact that diving isn't for everyone. That said, he straightened himself up and passed the course. (Barely, and with some begrudging on my part, since he wasn't strictly speaking "my" student), but he passed.

Being a fairly new diver, I might bring be able to bring a little prospective to the discussion. Because mask on the forehead is so entrenched (ie signals diver in trouble) in convention, I was taught to turn mask around.

Yeah, I know the yadda, yadda about keeping your mask on but waiting for the boat on a drift dive can go on for like 10 minutes or even longer. And yeah, I always put my mask back down to board boat as a safety precaution. Not a fashion statement at all, just aids in vision at the surface.

Properly, it's known as MSOF (Mask Strap On Forehead)
MOB isn't exactly what I'd call a "new" trend ... I've got dive buddies who've been doing that longer than I've been diving.

By the way, it's really MOA (mask on afthead).

Personally, until I grow eyes in the back of my head, my mask stays facing forward ...

Back in the early 80's, in my OW class, we discussed the risk of losing an MOF (none of the "distress" signal BS then though). Someone then proceeded to tell me that an MOB would get me snide looks from the tech crowd though, since it was their thing.

You just can't win I guess.

I feel like MOB is a more securely stored position for a mask, than MOF, which is why I do it.

With that said I was out in the water with a ^*&%$#@ snorkel the other day and lifted my mask up to see and chat with our local coastal life guards. Since I had a snorkel I went MOF and chatted with them for a few minutes. You know what? They never jumped in the water and came to rescue me  Heck they didn't even ask me if I was okay? I guess MOF has passed into the realm of internet board lore.
