Re snorkel near the sting ray pen. Where can you enter safely if you are not staying at Blue Angel?
Nowhere else, really, though I doubt anyone would stop you from going in at BA if you aren't staying there.

Hey,
We're getting ready to go June 2-9. I have 2 digital cameras and video camera. I picked up 2 600 lumen lights with trays, are these going to be bright enough to get good pics at night?

You can enter the water on the south side of the sting ray pen. You will not need to go into Bue Angel.
You could, I guess, but it won't be an easy entry. I would never try it at night.

I know that there can be lots of urchins in the shallows. I am wary of entering the water any place where I am not familiar...

3 of us night snorkeled off the pier at Secrets last night. 2 of us were divers the 3rd wasn't and really enjoyed the experience. Saw 2 eels, porcupine fish, small lobsters, starfish and numerous other fish. Just make sure you have a good lite and look under all the concrete and other items on the bottom.

In short no. Unless, you're free diving down or doing close up photography I would be surprised if you get pics you are happy with.

Regarding the stingray pen, the entrance just south of it is recently quite clear of urchins. I wouldn't recommend it for a first time snorkeler but if you mind your step it's an easy entry spot.

The folks at blue Angel are really nice too though, I've not tried it but they might welcome you to pass through to access the ocean.

Regards,
Cameron
