New to Scuba - Fin help!

Hi there,

I'm sure this has been "asked to death" but I can't really find the exact answer I'm looking for searching around the forum... so I figured I'd start a new thread.

I'm brand new to scuba diving, I'm doing my pool sessions in January and then plan to do my open water down south in the spring. I'm a newbie.

Here's my question... I need fins.

Opinions on open heel/boot vs full foot designs for a combination of diving down south (Nassau, Mexcio etc in warmer water) and the occasional fresh water dive (cold) up here in the great lakes of Canada during the summer. 80%-20% split I'd imagine.

Based on those two variables (newbie + combo of warm water and cooler water occasionally diving).... "what fins do you recommend for me?" Any specific brands and fins that won't break the bank and offer great value?

I actually just purchased a pair of ScubaPro Jet Sport fins, and matching Scubapro boots. Fit and feel great, give them the trail in the pool come January!

Anyone tried these before?

I have seen every type of fin under the sun and I know they all are perfect for someone. I think you'll just have to find the one for you. That being said there are several that seem to have an inordinate amount of positive comments here. One thing from my own personal experience, I apparently have girlie feet as I tend to blister easily. I cannot wear the full foot type fins without booties. I wear booties and slip on fins (Mares Quattro) and never have a problem. I have tried the boot built in fins and invariably get blisters but that's just me.

Never tried them, but they seem to be pretty standard blade-type fins. They'll be fine.

My recommendation would have been for open heel fins and booties, so I think you made the right choice in that respect.

It's funny you noticed how quickly I found a pair of fins! Just after posting that thread I decided to run down to the local dive shop and look at some fin options... well before you know it I have a pair of boots and matching fins in the truck and I was on my way home! "eager" is an understatement

Can't wait to get out there and explore this new underwater world... having no previous experience with other fins, I'm sure these will work just fine for me. Once I've had a chance to compare these to other fins I will do a write up review as it seems hard to hunt down any solid reviews on these particular fins.
