I'm a Fish!
I have my eye on a few Apeks regs. I understand that they dont sell service kits to customers. Should this be a deal breaker. I dont know how to service my regs right now anyways but I would like to learn. I considered HOG regs just for this reason but Apeks/SP/Atomic seems to have a better reputation for more extream dives such as deep trimix, wreck penitration, ice so on and so on. I am starting my tech training in a few months and want quality gear. I am attracted to the price of HOG and I have heard great reviews but I would hate to save a few dollars now and regret it later. Any thoughs?

Before I became a dealer I bought a set of HOG regs for my doubles. I've had them to 130 plus and under the ice. With no issues whatsoever. Others have taken theirs to 200 plus and had no problems. I'm in the process of changing all of my regs over to HOG's after having used my first set for three years to be sure of what I was doing. The biggest factors are for me the reliablility of the design, proven track record (though not as long as some), ease of service, support from the owner of the company, warranty, and yes price.

I have yet to hear of any issues with any of the regs I have sold since starting to carry the line in March, And I have managed to sell more than few of them and shipped them all over the world. I would never have taken on a line I had any doubts about as my first product.

HOG regs haven't been on the market for a long time. Apeks regs have been around for decades.

If you are motivated, you should be able to learn how to work on the regs made by either company. They are very similar.

Overhaul kits for Apeks regs can be purchased from various retailers online. I haven't had any problems obtaining them.

If you are purchasing several sets of new regs for tech diving, it might make sense to go with the HOG regs. Used Apeks regs can also be purchased on Ebay or Craigslist.

In the past I have had no issues getting Apeks parts. The last set of regs purchased were HOG's and I see no reason to buy anything else. They cost what a regulator should. Work like a reg should, and parts are available for a reasonable price. Win win all around.
